"My daughter does that. I'll be telling her something and after a couple of minutes she'll go oh sorry I wasn't listening. I've done it myself so I forgive. when you have a lot on your mind it's difficult to stay focused. " Yes this is it. Usually I'll be thinking of everything I have to do that evening/weekend/how to generally sort my life out. I'll start thinking about previous interactions that are playing on my mind or whatever is making me anxious that day. I've always used things like white noise/brown noise/ASMR in the background while trying to get other things done or get to sleep, so maybe hearing someone talk for long stretches of time has that same effect on my brain?

"Got to agree with all this guy has said. I think you're right OP, it's a "you" problem. Your description does make you sound a little rude if I'm honest. Gbat " That's a shame

"Or some people drone on and your mind wanders to something more important." Apparently not in the case of this OP. "But I also do it with friends and family quite badly, and I find most of them very interesting. I think it's more of a "me" problem." Gbat

I'm very boring to talk to ![]() Hmm it's not so much content... For example I love my job and am always trying to learn more so I ask lots of questions, but then when someone explains it to me and it's a long answer I zone out. I really do think it's just the physical act of hearing someone's voice go on that makes me think it's like a good background to think about other stuff over, if that makes sense?

I'm very boring to talk to ![]() Thinking about it, this may also stem from my constant need of a second screen experience - literally typing this on my phone while I have a YouTube video playing on my laptop and a Netflix show going on the telly. "Am I the only one that zones out whenever someone talks for like, longer than a few sentences? Then I catch myself and force myself to pay attention because I don't want to be rude or because the information I'm getting is important, but then a few seconds later my mind starts wandering again... " The say a gold fish only has a 30 second attention span maybe your really just a gold fish .

"I don't normally, I'm quite attentive. But there one particular guy at work who when I ask him a question his answers are so long winded and of on tangents I'm even more confused after than I was when I asked him the question. It's like he's used one of them Men in Black zappers on me. " Ahh I've had this. People that go through the entire fucking alphabet just to get from A to B. And because you have to remain "professional" or whatever, all you can do is smile and nod politely ![]()
