I need my waterfall thing looking at, the pond plants sorting, a general clean and a basic sorting out. So far all I’m finding is people who build them and landscape gardeners

Assuming your waterfall thing is a pump fed system, so you either need a sparky or decent handyman to look at why it’s not functioning? No power, blocked filter/ pickup pipe, knackered pump etc

The rest, any half decent garden can probably sort that out for you

I’ve had an electrician look at it who doesn’t have a clue why it’s not working. Need someone who knows about fish and pond plants.

I have Tench, they don’t find tadpoles tasty and live on the bottom eating rubbish that they do like. Hardly ever see them.

Ask at your local garden centre. Odds are they'll know someone.

You must have an aquatics centre, there's probably a notice board flyers there for someone or the staff will probably know someone.

The filter might need cleaning out it's probably blocked. You can do it yourself. Its a messy job. And an absolute ball ache. I filled in the pond in the end

When you say it's not working, what do you mean? Is it not cleaning or not moving the water?

COVENTRY

Ponds are all about balance. I have goldfish and plants.

I have a south facing garden. I have two solar oxygenators what work well and seem to keep my goldfish happy and oxygenated. I have some plants including water lilies. I have a solar filter which isn't working hard enough to keep the water clean. Something I need to rectify.

With the cost of electricity my pond is about using solar energy. Last year my electric powered filter needed cleaning every 4 days or so and then it stopped.

Trial and error seems to be the answer.

It’s got a large open ended tube that I can see in the pond and a pump looking thing in the bushes. I haven’t a clue what happens (as you can tell) but it no longer works when once it did

Yeah the open ended tube would probably draw the water in, through the filter in the bushes, then come back out usually through a water feature. There's probably a blockage somewhere if it's still got power to it.

Another time the UV light went in the filter unit so the pond filled up with algae and I think that blocked a pump.

And then you have to use green away stuff too.

And washing the slop out of the filter.

Yeah try to find a pond guy

Every spring you’ll get an algae bloom but as more plants flourish in the pond it will block that out.

Switch off any pump and fish it out of the water to clean. Gloves are recommended. Save the gunge as fertiliser for those plants that are hungry (lilies for example).

Squeeze the sponges hard and use that muck as above. The ceramic bits rinse in pond water as it’s covered with bacteria that break down the ammonia produced by the fish.

Hopefully the Uv light (if there is one) is still on when running? Replace if necessary.

Keep leaves out where possible.

Any surplus plants dragged out of the pond leave at the side overnight for things to crawl back in.

Ponds should be a bit mucky but not too much.

Go to your local aquatics centre or pet shop. I use to work in one we sold all that stuff in the shop.

You might just need a new pump, you have to be careful what plants you put in it, also you can get some lovely coloured cold water coldfish and they aren't to expensive.

From the sounds of it either the pump filter is blocked (most likely) or there's no power does the pump make a noise?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Seriously.

The pump in our pond stops whenever we have a power cut. To restart it I have to pull it out the pond, unscrew a connection and manually flick the little propeller bit to restart it.

Fucking annoying in winter when it happens frequently and the water is frigging cold.

Central

Check each of your specific plants' needs. Some can benefit from division, potentially reinvigorating them, or sorting out crowding issues, some of them will be more vigorous than others. Those you like most, you could potentially preserve more, than others, which may be a little thuggish.

Lots of plant matter will die and decay, potentially stoking algae growth and detritus. It can be helpful to remove some of the dead stuff regularly.

I can't help with pumps, my forte is plants, plus wildlife.

You’re not wrong!

I’m not going to touch any of it and certainly won’t be putting my hands in any filters full of goo.

If this guy doesn’t get back to me, I’ll be finding another.

Thanks for all the advice everyone but I definitely need a man who can!
