It’s odd how the labels change coloured, to black to person of colour. There’s also BAME, BME which originally was BAEM but In March, the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities recommended that the government stop using the term BAME.

Coloured was used by white people during segregation and hasn’t been widely used since the 70’s. Unless you’re over 60 and have lived in a cave your entire life you shouldn’t be using that at all. BAME is problematic because it’s just another way of putting everyone who isn’t white into another box.

For what it's worth I don't know any black people (a significant number make up my own family) who refer to each other by the N word, in fact hell would be raised if it ever did happen.

However, at the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, we should probably not try to railroad subcultures.

If you encounter white children shouting profanity or racial abuse, by all means educate them.

Given your extensive experience of in-group acceptance of the N word among some cultural groups, you'll be aware that you're missing vital context and you should leave them to it. Those with the context will have the conversations.

I think that word (and not as bad as n word but similar energy) has been a lot more reclaimed, but yes, I'd still never use it myself because of its (briefer, less bad, still bad) history.

My ancestors were overwhelmingly on the more powerful side so it's not a word I get to use.

It felt quite uncomfortable to say the "w" word tbh. I don't imagine many British people know it. But for me it's so imbued with thinking of Greek and Italian people as second class citizens when I was growing up. And also calling Aboriginals a shortened version of the word. I still cringe.

I had the mantra on repeat in my head "they knew better when they had the cognitive capacity". Because I had never ever heard them use a bigoted word before their cognitive decline was pretty significant.

Treating everyone as equal regardless of the colour of their skin, ethnic background or place of origin is just what we should all do and expect. Why would anyone think any different is beyond me despite racism often being described as a complex subject. It's sad that there is always so much going on that influences people's minds and feeds their prejudices. Just as in so many other things, there is right and wrong and there will never be anything right about racist behaviour or language. How could it be?

No brick wall, no deflection. I appreciate that as a white guy in a predominantly white society I’m not in the best position to comment on levels of offence from racist actions.

I suspect though that the overwhelming majority are more a case of cuntism (new word) than racism. Same applies to sexism & misogyny, ( a word I’d never heard until just a few years back) they are non discriminatory people that are rude / horrible to everyone.

Can I ask if people who have experienced racism, do you think it’s improving? Is it a problem for your children? We live in an area which is not particularly diverse and although I haven’t ever seen any examples of racism, I’m more than aware it exists.

My daughter (17) has a couple of close friends who are mixed race and they’ve openly discussed that it’s not been a problem for them so far. Let’s hope it continues that way for them, until they branch out into the big wide world perhaps

I’m lucky. Geordies are genuinely accepting people so I haven’t experienced much racism. Any I have experienced has been in anger or from someone who is very d*unk. I know others that have experienced it a lot more though.

You can’t hide from it forever. I never experienced racism really until I was like 11/12. Then it was the subtle things, the microaggressions, the being followed and stopped etc. some people never experience it. In the last 10 years alone I have experienced so much but I think learning more and studying more has made me hyper aware.

And in terms of my daughter (mixed race) she’s only small but there’s been comments made about her being lucky for not inheriting certain Black features and things like that. Do I think it’s getting better - it’s better than when my Nan and my mum were small. Not got better really during my lifetime though. In fact I sometimes feel like it’s getting worse in the last few years.

I don’t live in another country so why is that relevant? I have travelled to other countries and have never experienced any racism though.

I'm an immigrant and occasionally I get told how racist Australians are.

In the context of the news when I'm told, it's always, always appropriate when I get that, even when I personally had fuck all to do with it

My first real experience with racism was when I was around 13. I lost it and knocked his teeth out. I don’t think I’m a hard man or anything but that probably played a big part in me not experiencing much more. Others who don’t react probably get it worse.

Some people do find stuff like that offensive but that doesn’t bother me. I don’t mind a slip up if someone is genuinely trying not to offend. Nobody is perfect, we all mess up but as long as people are trying that’s all that should matter

I don’t wish to ever be referred to or judged by my race or my sex, but when people do or they tell me about my white male privilege or how I can’t possibly understand a “woman’s issue” (particularly when they wouldn’t dare tell that to a someone identifying as a woman) then they’re not necessarily being maliciously racist or sexist or any other ist or even intentionally offensive. They’re just expressing their feelings and opinions. I think it’s really important to judge people by their intentions rather than our own high, personal and sometimes false standards or the particular language we ourselves find acceptable.

Also just because some people are offended by a particular word, doesn’t mean it can’t be used. Use it at your peril though and be prepared to deal with (or blissfully ignore) the reaction it creates and the consequences.

Internet forums are without fail filled with bedroom brain boxes trying to educate their own view or own truth on people in preference to the collective reality we all share. Feels good I guess to try to make oneself look smarter than the others, whatever shade they are - it’s why people come here, right?

Mad to see that a) we still don’t have a decent understanding of racism- specifically anti black racism. b) we seem to think that Black people protecting themselves from experiencing the violence of racism (because racism is violence) is racism in itself. - this is particularly funny because so many people on here say that politics has nothing to do with who someone would meet.

c) in the face of multiple Black people and mixed race people talking of their experience with racism in this thread, it still ended up with the undermining of our experiences and someone even confidently using the N word in the thread.
