Her duties have been relaxed because of health, but she refuses to admit her age stops her from doing anything.

She has already in a way by giving more duties to those below her. She’ll go when she’s ready and it won’t be abdication.

I don't think that's true. She accepts she has limited mobility and now uses a golf cart when walking her corgis

Neither am I but if you notice a lot of her public duties have been taken over by the younger (that makes me laugh because Prince Charles is in his 70s) royals. I suspect he private duties are being slowly given over too. She's old for sure but she has no domestic responsibilities probably doesn't even need to make herself a cup of tea, no financial worries, will always be able to heat and eat, I reckon she can manage the odd zoom call.

She may have to because of her age but I have inside knowledge that she is stubborn enough to refuse that her age will stop her.

It's always good for the elderly to keep relatively busy. Busy people who suddenly give up all their work often suffer and their health deteriorates rapidly. Best keeping body and mind active.

Since they are all pretty irrelevant, I wonder what diffence it makes who the monarch is.

If she did abdicate, it wouldn't be Charles who becomes king. A monarch doesn't just abdicate themselves. They abdicate their entire hereditary line. You can see this in the abdication letter of Edward VIII in 1936. The succession line would change entirely.

It sounds very simple to say Elizabeth II should abdicate so Charles can become king, but that's not what would happen and the ramifications would be enormous inside the royal family.

Who was next in line after Edward VIII then? He had no kids and it went to his eldest brother.

That's interesting. I understood that when a monarch abdicated the throne passed to the next in line ie Prince Charles in the case of QE2. I thought the line about descendants in Edward V111's instrument of abdication was to stop any of his future children claiming the throne. The throne then passed to the next in line as he had no children at the time.

I'm happy to be corrected on that though, my knowledge is a bit shaky on it

I'm not sure it is true. Like you I'm no expert on constitutional law. Charles could be Prince Regent if the Queen became too infirm to rule. I know that much.

I think the whole point is the Queen had a front row seat to the only voluntary abdication in the entire history of the monarch.

Not only is she no quitter she knows being Monarch isn't a job you can just quit it's her entire being. She's there till the very end. If she became permanently ill she would still be Monarch, but Charles would be Prince Regent.

That is true. She can abdicate and Prince Charles will become king. Or she can retire from all her duties, in which case, and needs agreement, Charles can then undertake all the queens duties as Prince Regent until her death and then become king.
