Memory lane...

...can sometimes be full of twists and turns, lacking street lighting and dropped kerbs

Upon reading a book to our 5yo, that was originally her brother's (he's 19), I had both the "awwwwww" memories and "WTF, who thought this was okay for children" thoughts.

The book - Dr. Dog. Gifted to us by my parasitology lecturer at uni (she was impressed that our son sat quietly through lectures on Trichuris etc). It contains the immortal line "you should never scratch your bum then suck your thumb," which greatly appealed to a 4/5yo boy.

Anyhow, upon reading tonight, I'm reminded it also refers to a young boy (maybe 10/11yrs old) smoking behind the bike shed and to Grandad drinking too much beer. I particularly made a face at the smoking bit!

It was originally written nearly 30 years ago, in 1994. Was the world quite so different then? Should I get my rose tinted specs out? And why didn't I have the same reaction back in 2006 (ish)?!

Looking back on so much tv shows and stuff made for kids in the 80s 90s and start off the 2000s it’s crazy to think off the stuff they put in and how they got away with it

One book I read as a child I can't even bring myself to name. My mum tried to give it to me for my children and got offended when I refused and told her she should destroy it.

It was racist in the extreme

Memories (rose tinted or otherwise) don't have to be book related.

But Nicecouple, yes, I can imagine. I'm thinking back to some things I read as a child (that were already very, very old by the time I was reading them).

Compare 28 years prior to 1994 and it's 1966. Vast changes during that time...not so much 1994 to 2022.

It upsets me that 1994 is as far from 1966 as 1994 is to 2022

Mr KC pointed this out the other day. I think the year in question was 1992. He said, it's like thinking of 1962 when you were in the year 1992

I'm ancient enough to remember people smoking EVERYWHERE! Including on the London tube .

But my much loved Grandad smoked like a chimney so I kind of miss the smell and get nice memories on the rare times I experience it now, usually abroad.
