Hey girls, I want to start doing my makeup but I'm totally new to the whole thing so I wanted to ask, what essentials do I need to start doing my own makeup? Any tips also? Nothing too complicated but it is something I want to get right

I don't use foundation just a skin brightening moisturiser, then black eyeliner, eyeshadow, false lash effect mascara & some bronzer on my cheeks..

Start with the basics and work your way up from there. There's loads of tutorials online to help you through it.

A concealer, foundation, mascara and lippy is a good starter pack.

"Is mascara not eyeliner? Stupid question I know "

Mascara puts a coat of usually black on your eyelashes.

Eyeliner you draw on your lid, usually near your lashes.

"I don't use foundation just a skin brightening moisturiser, then black eyeliner, eyeshadow, false lash effect mascara & some bronzer on my cheeks.. "

I’d second this, I just use a ti ted moisturiser must of the time, it’s easy to overdo foundation if your not used to it (and sometimes even when you are lol) . Try the Nivea tinted face moisturiser, nice and cheap and a good starting point.

To answer one of your question, mascara goes on the lashes themselves, eyeliner goes on the eyelid along the lash line, it can be in pencil, liquid or gel and can’t be quite tricky but as with everything, practise , practise , practise is the key.

Get stuck in and see what you like but don’t worry about expensive stuff until you got the basics sorted would be my top tip

What is concealer? Is that always first? I always thought foundation was?

As liquids they're probably similar, although mascara has fibres in it.

Mascara has a brush in it to get it on your lashes.

Liners are like little crayons.

"What is concealer? Is that always first? I always thought foundation was?"

Usually used under eyes and to cover any spots, redness or obvious areas of discolouration.

Concealer can help to cover up blemishes, dark spots etc and is like a thicker foundation.

Best to use this sparingly or else you can look “caked up” quite quickly with it.

Can be useful for covering beard shadow if you struggle with that but it’s a fine line as too much can actually make it stand out more.

Personally if I’m going to use it, I’d put on before foundation but I know some use it after

Also, think about your skincare and preparation before you slap on any make up. Spend a couple of mins working a decent moisturiser into into your face.

"What is concealer? Is that always first? I always thought foundation was?"

Concealer - can be coloured or skin tone. Covers dark circles and blemishes etc.

I'll put it over foundation.

Get on you tube and find some tutorials. There's some great stuff out there.

No, would be too heavy and draws attention to flaws if over used.

Absolutely, just for the “trouble areas” , there’s a few different videos on YouTube for helping to cover beard shadow if you need to and weirdly it’s all about using different coloured concealers to offset the darker skin shades found around the jaw line. It might surprise you, it did me

If I had a spot on my nose, I'd dab concealer on it.

IT your skin but better is a good colour correcting cream and pretty hydrating, like a concealer, I get the spf50. It's for all your face.

But I agree with what someone else said, your make up always looks much better if you prep your skin well, and with using moisturisers, primers, etc.

If your on instagram Byrony Blake does some good make up videos with easy guides for all different looks.

Concealer corrects more prominent problems, like pimples or under eye darkness. I personally put it under my foundation/tinted moisturiser, but it's up to you.

Hang on .. ‘hey girls’ … us guys are amazing at makeup too ….. aren’t we ? Ah ok, you’re right… maybe not.

But what the ‘girls’ maybe don’t know much about is feminisation techniques, particularly using contouring (dark and light shading to hide a masculine jaw or nose for example, and generally soften male features). There are some great links on YouTube… if you can’t find any… just ask.

I seem to know a lot about this for a ‘straight’ guy…. intriguing lol

That’s the order I would start. Of course there so many different type and brands and you may find you like it better the other way round. No such thing as a “must do” with make up apart from getting a good makeup remover (and remembering to use it before going to sleep lol )

And no such thing as a silly question , everyone starts somewhere

The best thing you need to do when wearing make up is look after your skin. Get a good exfoliator, toner and moisturiser as well

I never use foundation (face full of freckles) just a tinted moisturiser, eye liner, mascara and a long stay lip colour. I have to full in my eyebrows too because they are very light naturally so look invisable.

I recommend using a primer. Apply it first and then your foundation, it makes a big difference.

Is it difficult to take makeup off for example using shower gel? Lol or is a makeup remover a must have?

Is primer and concealer same thing?

No. A primer I use all over my face as a base, I only put concealer on blemishes or dark circles under my eyes etc, but I'm no expert

check out Rosalique for redness, it’s SPF too.

Estée Lauder double wear foundation, if you can find a local counter, they have digital colour matching devices and they’re spot on x

Some make up can be more tenacious than others. The foundation will probably come off okay in the shower but shower gel come very easily dry your skin out. Better to use a proper face wash.

I’m making a few assumptions so please do correct me if I’m wrong but if it’s important to you to remove all traces after you’re done and back in male mode then things like mascara and eyeliner may hang on in there after a shower so a good eye make remover would be handy

I'd get a makeup remover, oil based, if nothing else to get rid of things like mascara.

And a face wash for your skincare

It can be easier if you remove it in 3 goes.

First I use a eye make up remover, the nivea one in 2 blue colours is good.

Then a cream make up remover.

Then a face wash, a warm flannel is good too.

That should get all traces off for you..

Then moisturise.

Have fun with your new looks x

Others have pretty much covered the essentials but I'd add that if you're going to try foundation it's important you get a good match for your skin tone and undertone. Before you go spending any money I'd recommend going to a department store or large boots that does consultations or has a lot of makeup concession stands and getting some help getting a match for your skin.

When you start off you'll be surprised how difficult it is to get even coverage and precise application, so begin with subtle looks and do your makeup with natural sunlight or daylight lamps so you don't leave the house with a much bolder or dogerrent look than you thought you'd applied.

And finally just go reiterate half the work is getting into a good skincare routine. Exfoliate, cleanse and toner. Maybe a day and night cream.

Put an oil based oil remover onto a cotton pad, hold on your closed eye for a minute or so, before removal routine. It'll help dissolve mascara and eyeliner

Good skin care regime and primer.

Depends how natural you want to look. I tend to go for a medium to full coverage foundation and then a slighter lighter concealer for highlights under my eyes, centre of my chin and forehead and down my nose.

Bronzer to bring make some dimension. I do cream contour sometimes first depending on what I'm doing that day.

Blush lmacement for me is more on my temples thatn my cheeks as it lifts my face.

Eye shadow primer to make the colours pop. Eyebrow pomade. Mascara.

Good brushes help massively as well. Not mega expensive but decent. I've got morphe and docolor ones.

I can’t be arsed with tan - couldn’t tell you lol

Maybe start with tinted moisturisers - NARS are pricey but so good. Always get colour matched by a member of staff

Nothing worse than looking like you’ve rubbed a darker shade of orange all around your face.

I’m sure a lot of us remember the Maybelline Dream Matte mousse days and wearing bright blue eye shadow!
