I don't know my personality type and I think it's probably best that I don't.

Is "awesome" a personality type?

I love MBTI. Horoscopes for smart(ish) people.

I'm INTP. Reserved and aloof on the outside with a passion for thinking and theorising.

Horoscopes marketed at people in control of departmental budgets. Scam. Disregard and avoid.

Is it in the form of questionnaires?

It's a means for people to label others IMO. Not a fan. Should be encouraging people to understand themselves Not to be used as an excuse or a way to limit people

doesn't that depend on how the answers to the questions are interpreted and the biases and prejudices of the person doing the interpretation? I'm also aware that if I'm answering a questionnaire I answer according to how I want to be perceived (or how I want to perceive myself) rather than truthfully.

"...its not about labeling ppl ..."

Tell that to the various HR departments that hire people based on whether a person's MBTI profile indicates that they'd be a good fit for the company.

The Myers Briggs isn't particularly valuable, as it's not based on valid scientific evidence.

I find it interesting although I do recognise it as somewhat pseudoscience.

Not as bad as Horoscopes, but only marginally better.

I do believe however, that as a foundation for bringing certain groups of people together with common traits, it's useful in that regards. I suppose it's what you do with that information and how you apply it.

For example, if all the people you seem to fall in to conflict with have an underlying common MBTI "type", then it's potentially useful to understand that type and what approach might deescalate conflict in said people. And in learning about others, we learn about ourselves to.

So yes, I do see some merit in it.

(INTJ by the way)

I actually make content about MBTI on my YouTube channel. I’m an ISTP myself.

I think the comparison to Horoscopes is quite problematic. With horoscopes, you’re given a type at birth based on the position of the sun, moon & starts, something that has nothing to do with you. It’s like an omen type projection.

With MBTI, it’s actually just summarising your own patterns of behaviour, and giving you a summarised tag based on the groups of motivations and behaviours you have.

I don’t think anyone is claiming it’s a science, not all that’s accurate is scientific. Mathematics is technically not scientific. Logical proofs are not scientific, that doesn’t make them any invalid in their use. Science is just one of the things ways to determine truths, but the definition of what’s “scientific” is extremely narrow, such that it doesn’t allow for many other valid methods to finding truth (e.g. Sherlock Holmes’ Deductive Methods are accurate, despite not being scientific).

So I think it’s quite a moot point to say “MBTI is a pseudosciene”, it’s more of a “If you eat meat most of the time, you are definitely not a vegetarian” classification, it’s just summarising your behaviou, which is why I find it absurd that people put it on the level of horoscopes

A true problem with MBTI testing is that you can’t truly get the full picture of a person from solely an internal or external view. People who do the test on their own will lie to themselves, and people who get someone else to do the test for them won’t understand that a person’s behaviour may not match their internal motivations, but are rather coerced by societal expectations. I believe MBTI is supposed to measure your preferred behaviours & internal motivations as opposed to behaviours expected in your social construct.

Also, a lot of the quizzes available ask these very poorly written subjective questions, where the person might misplace themselves along a spectrum based on their local social constructs. I personally have been developing better questions to better determine MBTI in a slightly more objective way, and I’m quite accurate with my typing of other people now.

Also, the base theory of cognitive function, which actually came from Carl Jung (not Myers & Briggs) got removed my “clinical sanitisation”, in order to be turned into a corporate tool, for profit, which is why it can be so badly administered. That’s another reason why some accuracy is lost.

Cognitive functions are better than just the letters. I’m happy to explain this further in DMs to someone who’s interest
