Why do people do it?

Someone asks a question and they have to post and say they don't know the answer.

It's not only on here, take a look at Amazon questions.

Worthing

On other forums it's possibly to 'follow' replies and get a notification. Fab should introduce similar or maybe a notification if someone quotes your reply.

Those Amazon questions make me laugh. I guess people think the email you get is only sent to them.

Why assume it's a compulsion? The person responding may be thinking it's the right thing to do if they've read something , to let the asker know there are people reading.

Imagine that 10 people read and no one responds. Then one more reads and does respond. The asker has NO idea how many people their question actually reached.

A lot of 'I don't knows' also indicates that the answer is not widely known in the community of people who read and answer, itself a good indication that the asker needs to look elsewhere.

If everyone in work was to read something on a notice board and not respond - that tells us nothing because we don't know who didn't read / respond.

If someone asks me face to face I can't just walk away ....... I have to say ' I don't know sorry' ...... which is nice cos it also means ... I'd help but i can't.

So ........ those who post 'I don't know' ........ it's okay in my book

I like looking out for the serial poster’s as they are usually quite funny ones and get people chatting.

I don’t mean, ‘how much mastic do I need’ type of question… agreed, use Google.

All depends on what is going on in the head of the reader. I saw "compulsive posting" and thought ooh good I could do with a hand with the stock fencing. I realise not helpful to Op's quandry, but no Op can determine what others can say.

Free speech rulz!

I have a problem with my fence panels but I have managed to think up an ingenious idea which I may sell on You Tube.

Good point about the email, maybe it's that.

Same on Argos.

"17 questions answered"...

16 are "I don't know"

Sometimes it’s so they save the thread and can check back later to see what the suggested answers may be - it also helps the OP keep their thread on the top page of the lounge so someone who does have an answer may see it and respond. Not always about attention seeking in my opinion.
