Abe Lincoln's old adage that "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time" must have been based on his experience using the internet.

With the ability to create different personas it has become so much easier to fool people as many have found on this site alone.

Not just with fake accounts either.

Tagging or being tagged with popular characters often gives a false impression of status and who really knows who.

The question therefore is, when you fool some of the people all of the time are you also fooling yourself into believing your own press and it becomes self perpetuating?

Yes it happens all the time on here.They usually have a side kick or dozen who keep their perceived popularity up until it falls apart. They also are very good at trying to gather info on others on here. Even those they will never meet. Worse are those who share the info that others have trusted them with.

To be honest for an adult site it's very childish with the attitudes and the need to be in the perceived 'popular' groups that they ignore red flags galore.Then cry when it all goes tits up. And it always does.

I keep my circle small with people I know and trust and it is so much easier being away from the background dramatics that go on.

Sometimes it's lovely to be on the periphery. Sometimes it feels isolating, like you've walked into a pub full of regulars and ended up sitting alone in a corner.

As someone who has never fit in here what goes on with the popular types doesn't have much impact on me so I tend to leave it well alone and carry on doing my own thing.

I disregard anything anyone says about other people and make my own mind up based on my own interactions & meetings.

You are right about the ‘researchers’ , how sad have they nothing more interesting to do that obsess about the lives of others

Wow this is new there are special friendship groups and researchers? Literally never come across either of these tbh guess we are living in our own fabland.....sounds like people haven't got enough going on in their lives and are just bored....each to their own though as long as they're having fun xx

Just to add to the original post. It's not all about being cool. It's about perceptions.

I've seen numerous woe is me threads where people talk about the difficulties they face on here and how they are getting creepy messages from guys on social media related to fab and they wonder how they could possibly have found out anything about them?

In my opinion it's very obvious. Most people including myself like to keep our fab circles small which allows us to focus on a few rather than have endless conversations with lots of people. It also allows us to control to some degree what info is given out.

There are a small minority of people thankfully who tag themselves in every forum conversation which gives the impression that they are on first name terms with more prominent forumites.

They join every chatgroup, and have befriended everyone they possibly can.

When meeting in person or at socials they are the most indiscreet people you could possibly meet so it's pretty obvious how personal details have become currency.

And yet people still scratch their heads over how so and so knows such and such.

Has no one learnt from the lessons of the past and those hiding in plain sight?

It's a serious issue which too many are content to turn a blind eye to which is understandable if you want to avoid the drama but then again what if it was your info they were dealing in?
