It will be my 9th general anaesthetic and it still scares me!

Any tips on getting over the fear?

I already can’t wait to eat food!

Firstly, hope all goes well.

I’ve had more than my share of operations for various reasons , but I use slow breathing to calm down, we are all different but that helps me.

Best of luck for the op! I'm sure it'll all be fine

As for anaesthetic, just try and look forward to it... you'll feel all loopy for a few seconds and then the next thing you know it'll be all over and you'll be waking up

I’ll ask for the pre med and hopefully that will help. Looking forward to it being over!

Hope the surgery goes well OP

I recently had general anesthetic and my advice is to look forward to the bit when you go in the little room with the anesthetist because they will give you the magic medicine (head out of the gutter peeps) which I flipping adore. That moment of utter relaxation, calmness and you drift off to the land of nod.

I am almost envious now.

Best wishes for a good recovery post OP, and listen to your body regarding rest.

I know what you mean, but just try to focus on the fact that once its done, its done, and no need to worry after that.

Ahhhh good luck...literally 8 years ago tomorrow I Nilly had surgery (and willy 8 weeks ago), as I was drifting off I thought...I must think of my children...woke having dreamt about my wellies ....

You're in safe hands...enjoy the after op meds and give yourself plenty of recovery time

Lots of love

I had many ops as a child and the pre-med was my favourite part, as an adult had a few ops but never been given or offered a pre-med - I feel truly robbed!!

Speak to the anaesthetist about your fear and they should calm you. Wishing you a speedy recovery x

Funny you should say that, the only time in my life that I’ve been spiked was by a surgeon that I was sleeping with.

East London

I always look forward to the recovery time after an operation (although last time I was very uncomfortable and couldn't sleep in any position).

It's nice to leave all the responsibilities indoors to someone else for a change.

I've never worried about being anaesthetised, thankfully.

Thankfully he is in prison!

I (Mark) went for a camera down the throat one time and they sedated me no issue at all, but when I woke up there was a nun bending over me asking me if she was in the right place, for a moment I thought I had died and all that religious nonsense was true! She just wanted to know what ward it was! Completely true.

The only hot doctor I've had attending me was when I had my first baby.

I'd had stitches and he had to check them, in front of some student doctors and the nurse.

My advice would be to concentrate on your breathing as they wheel you in.

Take slow, deep breaths into the bottom of your lungs, as you think about something or someone who makes you happy.

My last surgery took more than 7 hours and involved my heart coming out of my body and I’m fine so genuinely you will be fine. Anaesthesia is far better than the alternative! I found chatting to the people taking me down and in the theatre quite amusing
