A positive thread about race. For a change.

I don’t expect this thread to be super popular. But maybe someone sees it and feels it. But I feel like the only time on fab we talk about Black people or other people of colour is in the context of racism where we are then gaslit and/ or exposed to further racism.

So today I just wanted to say to you all that we are beautiful and we belong here. I love seeing and reading so many different but familiar perspectives on here so I am here to say, keep coming back, I see you, I love you. And there’s more to our experiences than the negative stuff.

P.s. I know I talk about race a lot. And honestly if you don’t like that about me then that sucks for you doesn’t it? X

Its nice to see something you are passionate about though

We just only occasionally can find the right mix of debate on here as the varying factors are immense as we all have off days.

Also we should discuss the questionable topics more without fear of it turning into a shit show.

Maybe today's the day to start one

Love this OP. Race, sexuality, age and gender inequalities are issues that people face daily.

Whilst it might appear jarring to those not affected by those issues, imagine how jarring it is for those faced with (and reminded of) these issues everyday.

I don't particularly understand your need to end with an antagonistic tone to your otherwise positive comment.

In reference to your post, race isn't a consideration for me and I suspect, most people, which is perhaps why it isn't mentioned much.

To be honest I've never seen a post where racism has been bought into it, but thats not to say that it hasn't.

"I don’t expect this thread to be super popular.

I don't particularly understand your need to end with an antagonistic tone to your otherwise positive comment.

In reference to your post, race isn't a consideration for me and I suspect, most people, which is perhaps why it isn't mentioned much.

I'm glad society is gradually developing more empathy."

Empathys pouring out of all corners now ,we sure need swimming lessons all of us on here.

I don't think saying "I don't see colour" is helpful because it ignores all of the ways race impacts on people. And I do notice what colour people are. Just like someone would notice how pale and freckled I am. It's just reality.

So black people let themselves be pulled over twice as often by police? Black women let themselves have much worse maternity outcomes than white women?

I’m married to a black woman. Jamaican heritage whose DNA test showed heritage from the Sudan to the Jews. She looks West African and gets approached by lonely travellers from that region.

Me? I’m Nordic and wouldn’t be out of place in the SS. By race I mean.

We get funny looks from some particularly as my wife asked me to grow my beard back so I look like a Boer! I tend to wear clothes similar to the rednecks too.

But I don’t believe in ‘race’ as it’s superficial. Colour doesn’t mean a lot as an Italian could have skin tone close to my wife’s.

I haven’t ever had a bad experience with a black person, only thuggish Brits.

My wife is most proud of being born in Yorkshire. Me? Proud of being called ‘one of us’ by her and her family.

I believe in race as a social construct with very real knock on effects. Are there unambiguous biological differences that are definitely race? Not really.

There are significant differences in treatment. That's what matters.

Indeed. How you identify is up to you but can of course be subconscious as ‘society’ has forced it on you.

I’m not ‘white’ and don’t fit in with typical middle England. Never have. Maybe my Catholic anti establishment mother was to blame? I’m just a native of the British Isles as is my wife but her soul is in Jamaica.

Sorry to vent but I know everyone means well with the colour blind stuff but sometimes I want people to look at me and see me. Like really see me. See the weight of this race in this society. The way we navigate the world is not the same. The way we experience the world is not the same. The threat of racism dictates which spaces I’m happy to navigate safely. You can have all the degrees in the world (which you’re less likely to get) but you stick a hoodie and some tracksuit bottoms on and you’ll still get followed around the supermarket. How embarrassing. You’ll still get weird looks. You’ll still get asked where you’re really from. Because you never really belong here. This is never *really* your home. And the govt have shown willingness to take that away. To take away what makes us ‘belong’. I want you to see that when you look at me. I want you to see me, sat there at 18, excited to experience the world that experiencing racism from a group of about 15 lads. The child I was when I was walking home in the freezing cold and get stopped ‘because I fit the description’ at 16 years old. The guy that worked hard for what I got but still got told I was only at a good uni because of quotas. See me, who reads about and understands racism (a little bit) and experience it most days knowingly, probably every day unknowingly, and still gets gaslit about what is it isn’t really racism. To have to come online and put up with people justifying murdering people that look like you. Advocating shooting people that look like you. To go to school and get taught revisionist versions of your history which make out the people that oppressed you weren’t all that bad. Etc. Etc. And then to be told, we’re all the same, I don’t see your race, and have to be grateful. Lol. It’s exhausting. It’s exhausting researching racist attacks before you go on holiday. It’s exhausting reading reviews on how bad the racism is before you go on holiday. Considering your safety because you’re Black, that’s not normal man. I used to cry at night you know. I used to cry because I thought being black made me ugly, because I used to think it was my skin’s fault that people hate me. And I still feel that some days. And then people just pretend you don’t experience any of that shit. Because they’re colourblind. It’s exhausting. Sorry came from one thread to here to rant before I lost my mind.

"Sorry to vent but I know everyone means well with the colour blind stuff but sometimes I want people to look at me and see me. I hope I see. And I'm sorry.

I want to see you, the burden you carry, my role in perpetuating it, and know how I can help.

Seeing that we're all comparing our phalluses here (including KC² because she's a hermaphrodite )... I'm a Sikh, with a white partner, with a Latin/Roman surname, with Scottish relatives and a son with Welsh roots. I've been called a Coconut.

Maketh of that what you will.

But I still enjoy Gin before my Sin.

You know what, it’s the gaslighting that I can’t deal with. I really live this shit. I really read and try and learn every day more and more about the history and the present day of this shit. And you’ll second guess it all because folks will make out that you’re mad, seeing things, imagining things, being dramatic. Like this is me on race but I not you get it. It happens with lots of lived experiences. It’s just exhausting. Like it makes existing exhausting.

As someone from a minority, I’ve found the past few years of constant conversations about race to be exhausting, whether that be a positive or negative discussion.

I wish people would go back to not mentioning it. I want to go back to being a person instead of a conversation topic

I don’t mind the conversation. I know it’s important. But it does feel exhausting the way you get dragged in and used as an expert or a spokesperson and have to have your experience ’debated’. The truth is for me though, I never really felt like they see us as equal human beings whether we discuss it or not. So some kind of change had to happen

But you’re the one that started this thread. If it’s so exhausting then why put it up for debate?

I didn’t start this thread to debate race with anyone. Nor have I engaged in a debate with anyone about race. If people want to debate race they can do that on a Thread for that. This is not that.

ANYWAY

Today I’m thinking about James Baldwin.

I also read a gorgeous essay in the book I’m reading currently about Black elders in Britain. And a great poem about Tottenham. I also have been re reading Caleb Femi’s poems. That’s keeping me together.

You can and should talk about it, Steve. I get it can be exhausting as posted above, but doesn't mean the conversations aren't necessary. I'm sorry for my flippant earlier post now - I thought we'd dialled down the serious, but it wasn't meant to appear insensitive on an important issue.

"I don’t expect this thread to be super popular.

Thank you, so much.

You know I’ve not read this but it’s been recommended to me. He was way ahead of his time. Such a gorgeous man honestly. I love reading his stuff, so beautifully written. I can hear him reading it to me in my head sometimes.

Seems a lot of you like this guy (I haven’t really used the forums so unsure who he was).

It seems like he did the right thing by deleting. He clearly has a lot on his mind. Maybe he can get in a bit of a stronger and more peaceful head space with a little time away

Sometimes the internet bombards us with too many opinions, and makes us want to give ours too much, also.
