"I'd be buggered then, use motorways on a daily basis " But, it could mean they would be less congested.

"I'd be buggered then, use motorways on a daily basis But, it could mean they would be less congested." I live a few miles away from M6, we all got promised that the M6 toll would be the answer to not sitting in traffic everyday, no one hardly uses it as too expensive. Now the hard shoulder is used for traffic and yet people are still sitting in traffic. Great idea lets move all the traffic onto A and B roads so everyone can sit on them. It just another form of taxation so that mansion tax can be avoided. Drivers already pay more than any other country as far I am aware( sure wishy will correct me), in road fund and fuel duty and also vat. I'll sit and wait on the U turn

"An fairer way would be to use ANPR systems at fuel pumps. So when you fill up your license plate is scanned and you get charged tax at a rate dependent on the CO2 emmissions of your engine. That way you'll be paying tax on the miles you do AND how polluting your car is. No need for a telemetry box in your car either. " That's a very good idea stand for parliament and see if you can make them see sense. They all just seem to want to club the motorist down there

Just tax fuel more, that way if you do more miles you pay more, if you have an ecomonical car you pay less than a 5ltr Jag. Also people who are car tax doggers couldn't get away it! This is an easy system not requiring any technology such as numberplate readers etc...very easy to administer too.

"I am bewildered that the government are even giving this idea an airing. How would you ensure that only small roads are used for the lower tax without installing telematics in every car? " The same way they know who drives in and out of London everyday.

"Why not scrap road tax and put a levy on fuel. Those who use more fuel will either be using the road more, or have more inefficient engines.... and these pay more. Seems fair to me. " Which then puts the cost of the higher mileage back on everyone else... if you think about it. Unless hauliers and the like can reclaim for the extra they pay on fuel........ otherwise it just puts the cost back onto the consumer.

We do take it for granted now but the Americans still ignore it and refuse to pay their charge.

" A simple way is to get rid of the Tax Disc entirely, and then load the duty on to fuel. The worse performing/ more gas guzzling your car is the more you pay; the same with the more miles you do. That would either make you consider a vehicle with a much better economy, and drive manufacturers to greater efficiency; Or to encourage people to use their vehicles less, car-share, or use alternative methods of transport
