How do you know that ...

your work/leisure/life balance is a healthy one?

Does it have to be a 40 hour week (or there abouts) to have that balance, is it about having enough time to socialise even if you work longer or antisocial hours...

How do you know that you are on the right balance?

I'd prefer to call it a life - work balance, but my employers wouldn't agree

I try to leave work behind at the end of the day, having an hour drive/commute helps

Home is family life, my kids are the number one priority, but sadly leaves little pleasure time, so when I get a chance to pay I try and make the most of it

So long as u feel happy with all aspects of ur life I would think u have the balance right, work to live not live to work, take time every day to appreciate the little things and all seems brighter! My dad always says don't sweat the small stuff, enjoy what u have, and I have my family which makes me happy

Legally a Work Life Balance is 11 hours from finishing to starting again.

So ... that means , travel, eating, family, socialising, shopping, laundry, cleaning, bathing, grooming, exercising, parenting ,resting, sleeping ALL have to be done within 11 hours.....

hardly a balance.

Yes Lady I have never seen before and have no idea who you are. That's right.

Apparently ...... if you drop the others you never get them back ... but you can drop work.

I cna relate to the importance of family life and that there is never enough time for that.

Good point - it is not a balance. Would you say that a really enjoyable and satisfying "job" could make that a different statement?

I made the decision not to pursue the life of a high flying executive nearly 4 years ago, and have not regretted it.

I do not regret not being the last person to leave the building and still made to feel bad about it.

I do not regret pushing things upwards or sideways for others to deal with.

I do not regret not having anyone reporting to me as I no longer need to perform appraisals.

I do not regret having to make decisions about whom to get rid of in redundancy situations.

I do not regret being told I needed to toe the line and be supportive of others' ideas even if they were not workable.

In return, I drive home every day, not as a physical and mental rack, but as someone who has put in a good days work, and am happy about the results.

I no longer put my job above all else, as I now appreciate there is more to life than my job.

"Number 4 it's the one I'd drop first. "

the choice for some is taken away from them

A good work life balance is hard to achieve because sometimes you get on the tread mill and don't realise that stepping off is just a case of pressing the stop button.

An enjoyable job helps. None the less you are compelled to do it. You are not free. It's work.

WHen mine were very young I worked abroad a lot and had to have a nanny - I realised quite soon that I was not doing anybody any justice the job, the family and myself. I only did that for a couple of years and then changed jobs to be more with my family - never looked back.

I have always stood by the motto

Work to live not live to work

I have been lucky and always managed to enjoy my work life, but alot of it was working for my own companies. I have always enjoyed the challenge that comes with work. It is a balancing act that needs constant readjustment. One of my grandfathers once told me that work clothes take less than a minute to put on and a life time to take off so make sure you enjoy your work.

Absolutely agree. Now I really love parts of my work and I dont even really feel I am working but I hear what Granny was saying about it still being work as I am not free during those times to do other things.

I am also in agreement with you that work can so define who you are and it can be so difficult to shake that off.

I found that my job was having such a bad effect on my mood and personality - long hours and stressful. Fortunately I had the opportunity to drop my hours per week, not by much, but it was enough to get me back to being me, loving my job again, and being able to be so much happier with life. People say 'but I can't afford to' - I didn't think I could, but I'd rather be the person I am now and cut my cloth accordingly, rather than the worn out, moody wreck I was!

I work to live, not live to work. So long as I'm working and I can live, the balance is just right, but once I have to work all the hours God sends just to break even, that's when the balance is wrong and I throw the towel in

It depends what balance you want.

Some people thrive on work, some thrive on liesure.

Do what makes you feel comfortable and works for you.

Even if it is your own business you still need to balance things. With a bit of age I learnt never promise something unless you can complete no matter the pressure put under. If a job takes ten hours it takes ten hours not five.
