Do you do as you’re told …

Not talking about in D/s sense here, so stand down (or not, depending on whether you do as you’re told )

Another thread made me think about whether as adults we do as we are told.

If someone tells we have to do something, do we/should we do it…

Do you follow rules regardless, because they benefit you, because you feel you should…

I tend to question rules but not break them. I worked as a consultant for a very long time and quickly realised that just because I couldn't see a purpose to a rule didn't mean there wasn't one.

I will question until I can see the sense of it. If it's senseless then I will try my damnedest to change it.

I'm pretty compliant at heart though.

I do follow rules mostly out of fear of the consequences of not doing so. But it’s funny because I despise the idea of social control and being controlled.

If it’s being told by another adult I’d do it only if I want to or it’s for a greater good.

Rules change as we change. The Bible was written over 2000 years ago. The rules made then were for that period in time, but most has changed.

I adore structure amd boundaries as that lets me flex myself within those constraints. But....I bend rules to suit my needs, this is why I am self employed, cannot blame anyone else but myself then. Law, health and safety rules are there for my well being and I trust in them, but no in answer to your question I hate being told what to do and will question them if they cannot give me a valid answer. Why is one of my most favourite words

It depends if I agree with them.

I even agree with some rules that get in my way and irritate me, but I understand them, so follow them.

I question those rules which obviously don't make any sense and break them if I need to as long as it doesn't cause any harm to others.

Critical thinking is lost in many people these days.

I have been known to apply creative interpretation and common sense filters to rules. Made me quite unpopular with management on occasion.

Depends what and who is telling me to do or not to do something.

If it's "you shouldn't try to push in your wheelchair up there" or something, then you've just shaken a red rag at a bull and I'll be off to prove you wrong.

If it's a Police officer telling me to exit the motorway at the next junction due to an accident, then I'll follow their direction.

By and large yes. If we all decide to only abide by rules that we think we agree with, then it all descends into chaos.

Sometimes there's a bigger picture that your opinion (lowest for of intelligence) really hasn't knowledge of, even if it appears a bit pointless?

Sometimes, people have a few chips on their shoulders and simply have difficulty conforming.

I’m pretty compliant…unless it’s a rule that has absolutely no point and someone is trying to enforce it, then it gets my back up.

In work there’s plenty of rules that make no sense but I’m a contractor and in the type of job that if everything worked I’d be out of a job quicker, so I like to see some pointless rules, that ensure the work takes longer

On a mooch

I follow the rules in my professional life and the laws of the land.

A few times my father has tried to tell me to do so & so and I flatly tell him no. I may be your child but I am an adult, have my own mind and make my own choices.

I do something because I choose to, not because someone tells me to do it or not to do something, that is likely to have the opposite effect.

I don't always do as I'm told though, but that's me fighting against my natural instinct because I've spent too long just doing what other people want me to without question.

Rules , they say are made to be broken , but some rules you have to obey or they can lead to serious fatalities if not , like a rule you HAVE to obey is what side of the road you drive on whatever country you drive in , you must obey that one cause if you don't , well then ,there sadly is only one outcome.

So for example eating, drinking , chewing gum isn’t allowed in any kind of public transport and smoking is limited to designated areas on streets with seats and ashtrays. The place is so spotless clean and maintained everyone is happy to keep these rules. You get the odd tourist smoking in the wrong place, throwing a cigarette down and it makes you quite angry they are disrespecting our home.

I’m sure a lot of these rules exist in the U.K. too but they aren’t clearly communicated , enforced, places aren’t clean and well maintained and so generally the rules have no use.

Same with alcohol, you wouldn’t risk carrying outside it without packaging or drinking in a street or park because no one does it, and the reasons you can’t are valid - there’s zero alcohol related crime - it would just be so odd and disrespectful to everyone.
