It was a different world back then.

Carry On Screaming. Carry On Camping, and Carry On Up the Kyber are the best.

"Some of the attitudes were terrible" - but you can't just previous generations by the standards of the current one. We're love the Carry On films, but they were a product of their time.

Watch them, enjoy them and appreciate them for what they are.

They are what they are.

Don’t judge them by today’s societal views.

Looking at the content of some of the films, it's astonishing that many of them were made when homosexuality was still illegal.

I like Girls, Camping and Convenience too (Mrs Moore lol).. quite a few of them probably.

Convenience was the only one not to make money apparently, probably because it was set around a strike.

They tried it in the 90's (the same two writers) but the actual language of film had changed by then, despite the largely new cast it didn't work at all.

Sure you can. Doesn't mean we need to set them on fire and/or never watch them again, but of course you can judge them. Same goes for people (and I know that makes a lot of old people very uncomfortable, and I'm fine with that - maybe they should be uncomfortable).

They knew what they were up to back then. I remember as a kid asking older people to explain why some of these things were okay. They pulled the "respect your elders" card and didn't want to talk about it. They knew.

You can judge any old films or TV shows you want based upon modern attitudes even songs, but hey let's face it, the snowflakes are dancing today

100% this.

Every generation looks back on the previous ones and cringe. I personally am really looking forward to seeing what things are being done now that will seem incredibly naff in 30 years time.

Illegal it may have been, but when it came to TV, many of the top stars were camper than a field of tents

John Inman, Larry Grayson, Danny LaRue and of course Carry Ons own Charles Hawtry & Kenneth Williams

I find it strange that some people are calling Carry On films old fashioned in attitude from a Swinging site!

I always found them like gentle class-based satires on British life. But everyone in them (even the villains) were always ultimately rendered so equal! Everyone just wanted both sex and love. They did get a bit too raunchy later in the 1970s (ironically because of the mostly-terrible British 1970's sex comedies that Carry-On pre-dated by years) - the regular cast all hated it, and in the end that was what saw off the series sadly. Sid James has already gone and they all went their separate ways.

TV at the time was infinitely more sexist imo. Anyone remember 321?

Classic British seaside humour at its best.

There’s roughly three phases to the Carry On series.

Early 60s black and white. Very innocent humour.

Mid 60s to very early 70s. This period contained the classics. Screaming, Cleo and Khyber were excellent and well written.

Mid 70s were not that great but fitted well with the sexual promiscuity of the time.

Not everyone loved them but I’d never go for a drink with someone who thought them all terrible.

I had a Carry On session on Saturday. I think I watched at least 3 in a row.

I prefer the earlier ones, Carry on Regardless and Carry on Cabby being my faves.

Hannah is American and had never heard of Carron On until about four years ago. She had seen a YouTube clip of Kenneth Williams presenting an item on Tomorrow's World of all things. She said he was very interesting and asked if I had heard of him. I explained that he is a bit of a legend but not for presenting science programmes!

We watched Carry On Camping last year and I was surprised how often we laughed. She used to watch Danger Mouse as a kid so I was able to point out Terry Scott who was the voice of Penfold, which was fun.

Carry on Screaming is actually a really good film. I also enjoy Camping and Convenience.

As a liberal, Guardian reading snowflake, woke etc…type, I still enjoy them and see the films for exactly what they are, perfect for their time.

If you actually properly watch them the men generally come across as bumbling sex starved idiots and the women portrayed quite well. Especially the early films.

Not seen Carry on Dick for awhile, may check that one out later.

I am a complete fan of all the Carry On films, I always have been, and always will be, I never tire of watching them.

They are of their time, and display the bawdy postcard humour, which was how it was. If you put it in that context and enjoy them for what they were, you won’t go wrong - if you don’t like em - don’t watch em!!

For me I love the period ones, Khyber, Camel, Dick etc … but always rewind and watch the scene of Liz Fraser and Dilys Layhe getting dressed on Cruising … I sooo love their lingerie, the epitome of feminine exquisite and very sexy dressing - just as it was in the 60s.

Love Rachel xxx

I love the Carry On films! Carry On Cabby is my favourite, but I like the innuendo laced scripts for most of them.

Some of the later ones are dire (Carry On Abroad, Carry On England and Carry On Behind have very little to recommend them) but at their best they still keep me laughing, no matter how many times I watch them.

I agree, Angela Douglas is better, but then who can forget the very sultry Valerie Lyon, I think she usurps all in the brief appearances she made.

Agreed, but neither of them can play innocent the way that Babs could. That's why she got the repeat rules (well, that and being willing to take her bra off).

all loved up

I adore the carry on movies... and the old St trinians ones.. watching them makes me smile.

Was on the big TV at work yesterday though and one of my colleagues got all offended... enough to complain to the owner who was in.

She did to be fair say if she stopped the residents watching older TV that may offend they would have nothing left to watch

Just think, if Hammer films had never done "On the buses", would there had been a "Carry on the buses" with Sid and Babs as driver and clippie, Bernard Breslaw as the mechanic and Sir lancelot running the depot?
