Flogging a dead horse

Jump to newest

By *otSoPosh OP   Woman

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

Do you do it? Do you realise you're doing it? Do you worry you're doing it but carry on in case you're wrong?

Also... is it animal cruelty if the horse was dead when you found it?

(The last horse mentioned was literal. The first one is metaphorical. Just to be clear)

Metaphorically I do. But where is the cross over between flogging a dead horse and determination to reach your goal.

Edison and inventing light bulbs comes to mind.

.

It's circumstantial.

In terms of people, possibly. I have an unwavering optimism, too soft with those who I know and care about to give up at the first hurdle. But is it flogging a dead horse? I don't know. Maybe to outsiders. Maybe sometimes the horse is in a deep sleep through external factors but appreciates a bit of flog of care. Sometimes I'll just let the horse be and accept it, embrace my happy with a stallion and a mare or two who are alive.

On here if conversations run their course I think it is what it is. Nothing is permanent and people are ever changing. I am constantly. And too lazy to keep coming up with lacklustre horse references.

"And too lazy to keep coming up with lacklustre horse references.

Hmm. Sleeping horse. That's a thought. As opposed to actually dead.

I think Compersion won the horse reference.

It wasn't a competition with my knowingly lacklustre efforts.

I'm trying to find the previous thread on this because someone said something brilliant that resonated a lot on this subject. It's an interesting thread nevertheless! "

I have a vague recollection I started a previous thread on this topic. And there was something pure genius said...

"I'm too lazy to futilely expend energy for no reward.

Even if you think the reward could be rewarding?

I'm a realist, and know that the reward won't be forthcoming.

I'll strive for something that will have a definitive positive result.

How do you know when that's going to happen though?"

The reward must be there for me to fight for it.

If it's a maybe, or no idea what the outcome will be, my brain says nope.

I don't mind not getting a reward, as in it doesn't damage me mentally, but I don't like using up precious energy- be it physical or mental-as I have very little to waste now.

I pick my battles.

My marriage was a dead horse q few years in.

I used up all my energies trying to drag, coax and beat it with a stick before giving up after 30 years.

Things change your perspective on life.

I'm drained now.

"Metaphorically I do and often don’t realise I am… as for the real dead horse I can’t say I’d be flogging one of those

Once you realise, do you stop or continue?

Normally I’ll stop usually around the time it becomes a one sided conversation and I’m getting two word responses

What if you're getting chatty responses, but you're the one who has to start the conversation each time?

Oh this is usually the case, I’ll talk to pretty much anybody but it’s usually me starting or carrying on the conversation which then leads to me thinking their just being polite and don’t want to tell me to do one

That's often how I feel. But then I don't know if it is my insecurity and self doubt telling me that. Especially when they randomly pop up and surprise me once in a while."

I think it’s harder when somebody messages out of the blue and their trying to keep a conversation going so they don’t seem boring… totally not speaking from experience

I’m sure your fine in regards to that, I think especially on here guys have to try that bit more because of the amount of messages women get, it’s understandable that women don’t want to put a lot into a message when their getting hundreds a day
