Is there far too much choice when it comes to shopping that we are spending more than we have to?

Many times I have a shopping list with a few items and end up getting a shit load more.

In the 70s,80s we just got what we needed and there was less choice but now we have the middle aisle in lidl/aldi with odd things we pick up and all these sauces/condiments etc that we never used in the 80s that we buy now.

Bread/buns for example, there must be atleast 100 varities you can buy, growing up there was only thin,medium or thick sliced.

Corner shop?

We had them growing up in the 70s but they all gone replaced by Express supermarkets from major chains.

Even those express shops have far too much choice.

There must be a hell of alot of food waste going into the bins.

In a previous job I worked for a wholesaler and one of the problems we had was storage as a result of all the available choices.

Especially the numerous options for the same product. For example kellogs cornflakes. There were 4 or 5 different sizes and then each of those had pricemarked options.

So just on cereal alone we were expected to carry up to 200 different lines.

Dont get me started on cereal.

70,80s there was only a few options and now you can get a full aisle of breakfast cereals in different sizes from individial packs to the very large boxes.

Same with biscuits,tea bags and coffee.

The consumer demands choice, the supplier/ retailer just fulfills that demand. Today's society is a gimme gimme society. We're all to blame but the young and up and coming are the worst offenders in my opinion.

Probably, but it's consumer-driven to some degree, whilst foisted on consumers to another.

If covid taught me anything, it's changed my shopping habits permanently.

Local supermarket online for food shop.

Amazon for everything else.

Haven't been to a high street shop since March 2020, and have absolutely no time nor inclination to do so since.

Yes, there are some things that Amazon might not have, nor the local retailer.

For example a particular type of artisan coffee beans we'd get from a local deli.

Found multiple online specialist retailers doing the same at a fraction of the price. So we use them now.

Deli has gone anyway. Didn't adapt to online shopping quick enough.

I read something that suggested that too many choices contributes to cognitive overload and fatigue for many people.

I don't know how to solve it, although do find myself reaching for stuff I like and trying to ignore everything else. (Some sections of the supermarket I just block out)

50 different ways to buy the same porridge oats... And in the same breath we complain about environmental and packaging damage.... Put something in a one mouthful sachet inside a wrapper fit a day ful of bites inside a container for the week inside a container for the months... Hmmm wonder how we could reduce our footprint.?

Heh - I bake my own bread, grow most my own veggies and eat as little processed food as I can. Why buy a flavoured yoghurt when you can get natural yoghurt and top with berries and pure maple syrup? Have a list, get in and get out - it’s really easy.

I do, however, have the kind of ingredients pantry to make a chef weep. Once you have the basics there and to hand, then you can make a different meal each day for a year, from any part of the world. Food. Is. The Best.

Globalisation and the want/need for everything means we get produce out of season - which tastes of nothing… sad that.

I think we might be having a change in habits after covid and especially the war in Ukraine (europes food basket) and rising prices where there will naturally be things which people can afford and buy as a treat rather than necessity.
