Crazy scientists have taken cells from jellyfish and sea anemonies and injected them into zebra fish to create fish that glow red and green. They call them transgenic fish. So far, so good. They then sell them to pet owners and guess what?

Yes the buggers are set free in the wild and they are breeding. These Frankenstein fish were bred for profit. What's going on here guys

Do they alternate how they glow, like a swimming traffic light, or does it depend on the fish?

Apparently if they are injected with jellyfish cells they glow green and if it's anenome they glow red..

What would happen if a shark ate them?

What do you get when you cross a jellyfish with a zebrafish?

Not as much of an academic rebuke as if you'd crossed a cow and an octopus

We do it with E.coli. It's cool, but not as cool as a cow!

Same I only done with E.coli. But imagine walking back from the pub to see a GFP cow in a field. (This isn't possible btw before anyone thinks I'm going to try, I'm just being a geeky idiot)

Green fluorescent protein it's what makes jelly fish glow. But it's a common tag used by these weirdo scientists to see where certain proteins are located in cells in fluorescent microscopy.

Tom you would seriously not believe the amount of paperwork goes into running a lab. We have health and safety visits etc and if we don't pass we will be shut down.

Careful what you wish for more paperwork means less lab time. Less lab time means I and others have less time to find out how diseases work, find targets for drug discovery and so on and so forth. Some of us scientists work in academia instead of industry, because we believe in making the world a better place for others.

If they're easy to spot by predatory fish then they shouldn't last long.

Unless their bio waste makes a difference I don't think there's much to worry about.
