To be fair though can you imagine the heating bill on all the properties you own as a member of parliament?

Must be very difficult writing all that off as expenses at the end of the year while collecting your rent profits

If the government fuckers want to give out advice on how easy it is to live on a pension, then the bastards should me made to live on that amount themselves. If national minimum wage is deemed enough for the people that keep the corridors of Westminster clean, then it should be enough for the twats that make those corridors dirty. After all, it's not as if MPs have to do that job under sufferance; they spend thousands on campaigning to win the privilege of getting the position. They don't even need any special qualifications to do it! The moment that an MP or a minister of the PM complains that they're not getting enough money they should be told to fuck right off, there's millions of people in this country that can't even dream of getting that much in their wage packet.

I'm glad that the government have unpaid advocates out there, mindlessly promoting reduction in living standards as admirable.

It's shameful work, but someone's got to do it.

All the freezing hungry children who can no longer swim in the rivers filled with shit will understand - horses have to be kept warm, corruption has to continue. Isn't Brexit Britain glorious?

What control did any of the other political parties have over the negotiations run by government, including I think it was the fishing minister who didn't read the agreement because of a nativity play?

You're correct, this is on the Tories. Maybe if they hadn't turned a party spat into a referendum, we'd be in a better position. Or maybe if they'd given a shit about the rule of law rather being busy sucking Putin off.

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Everyone was happy when the government were handing out cash like it was going out of fashion to keep the country afloat.

Now we have to pay it back, everyone is pissed..

A pandemic that closed down the world economy for 2 years and a war in Eastern Europe has just finished it off..

This is not a UK economic crisis, its a world crisis.

Don't know what people expect, the cupboards bare and the country has an eye watering debt that needs repaying and a health service that needs a massive cash investment to get the backlog cleared.

25 years of poor investment in our energy systems has left us exposed to external fuel price influences..

Just be thankful we aren't in Germany, at least when the pipeline from Russia gets shut, we will still have gas.

Well perhaps in a world crisis the government could have started by setting an example when telling everyone else to tighten their belts. Instead the fuckers gave themselves a pay rise. On top of all the billions that they've embezzled over the past few years. There has always been a bit of sporadic corruption in government, a few brown envelopes filled with used fivers, someone caught with their pants down and their cock out. This lot though have institutionalized the practice and refined it into an art form. They are the absolute scum of the earth, not just content for others to starve but actually cheering it on.

Is this a serious question?

You dry them inside, preferably in a ventilated room.

Same for damp, in the summer open windows and ventilation will help remove moisture.

How do you dry clothes in the winter? Surely not with a tumble dryer?

If you have a heart condition, a lung condition, arthritis or certain other conditions, are very young or very old you need your home heated to a certain temperature.

If you live in a flat in a purpose built flat you might have problems ventilating your home because you can't get a through flow of air. Drying washing in a home with little or no heating will lead to condensation, damp and all the problems associated with those things.

Yes, this is a serious question.

My place is small so the only room that I can hang clothes is a living room that gets no direct sunlight after mid afternoon. It can take days for the clothes to dry out, if it's damp outside.

In summer/nice weather I use the washing line.

Did you know that cavity wall insulation can actually trap in moisture, but closing up the air bricks?

Official advice is not to dry clothes indoors as the moisture can cause dampness.

Strange how the global crisis is affecting the UK far worse than everyone else if we’re all in the same boat, isn’t it?

Still, hardly surprising when you consider which party has been mismanaging our economy for the majority of the time.

Yes, I saw that word. My kitchen has no radiators, as it's really tiny, with a shaded northeasterly facing window. This is opened during cooking and is left on ventilate position when I'm not in, but the lack of sunlight 5'9 by 10'.

Some places are badly designed from the start.

My air bricks are chôked up by cavity wall insulation foam.

Yes it makes perfect sense. Boilers burn xkW of energy heating spaces that don't really need heating. Maintaining the heat of a person is far less - it could be about 100W or less if they are wrapped up.

If it was done effectively - you could reduce your energy bills to about 1/10 of the current amount.

Our heating is on constantly, we have found it cheaper than using the timer and heating the house from scratch every morning and evening. Without the heating on it will have a detrimental effect on your health, also your home and contents will get damp and cost more to repair or replace in the long run. Bring on the warmer weather.

No not necessarily true, that is why I said you can drastically reduce your bills but not kill them completely.

For all those will damp problems - your answer is not throwing loads of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide up the stack by turning your boiler on. Your problem is down to ventilation and insulation and probably other building problems - all fixable. You need to fix those anyway or you will be affecting your health.

If you rent you're reliant on your landlord to fix these things. Landlords are often (not always) reluctant to spend money on their properties beyond the bare minimum.

"Octupus energy are giving away electric blankets. Does that not just mean higher bills?

It's heating the person not the home

Only a matter of time before somebody invents tin foil pajamas to keep warm at night..

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't start handing out the foil blankets they wrap casualties in and they sometimes give to homeless people"

Handing out? Don't you mean charging people to have one, and then increasing their rates on the basis that they've now got "central heating".

Yes it makes sense. Layers of clothes and bedsocks are key. You can also wear a wooly hat around the house when the ears get cold. Not ideal for those who like to wear less but the cheapest option in these crazy times.

However burning of self collected logs from woodland is shortly to be made illegal. Not sure of the exact date but apparently the government intention is that "by 2023" it will be illegal to burn wood that has not been certified as "dried out". I suppose it might be possible to store your logs in your barn for the necessary five years or so and then cross the palm with silver of some government appointed inspector, but more likely you will be forced to buy pre-certified fuel from a tory owned company. Once again the poorest being screwed, when they are not even allowed to collect logs for burning to keep warm.

Nice to know that we are living back in the 1850's. With the difference that the wealthiest now have riches beyond the wildest dreams of the Dickensian ruling classes, and instead of having philanthropists who try to improve the lot of those at the bottom, we now have oligarchs who don't even see the majority of the poor and stamp on the faces of any that do come to their attention.

"erm, how do we dry our washing, when it's damp outside? What about fending off the damp patches and preventing mould. This bugger lurks in the back of the kick boards and wardrobes too.

Is this a serious question?

You dry them inside, preferably in a ventilated room.

Same for damp, in the summer open windows and ventilation will help remove moisture.

How do you dry clothes in the winter? Surely not with a tumble dryer?"

This is a very serious question, and one that the owners of tumble dryer are not going to understand. I am lucky, have sun (if it's a sunny day) most of the day so my clothes can dry easily-ish. It does take longer in winter, and creates dampness that needs heating.

Ah, but Brexit means a reduction in oversight and regulation from outside, handing more power to the bastards. For example, the amount of your utility bill that goes to paying the fines for dumping shit into the river. The Europeans can no longer go after the UK for it because of Brexit.

Brexit Britain: companies dumping shit into the waterways, consumers paying their fines, the government lying about it. Then the government cucks blaming other ordinary people for it.

The Government can fuck right off!

If they had put legislation in place 40 years ago to make all new homes properly insulated and energy efficient, with programmes to upgrade existing properties, and invested in renewables, we wouldn't need to be reliant on nuclear and fossil fuels.

This is not new information, I remember learning about it as a kid at school.

It might look like a 'no brainer' but people with brains have probably seen tons of sea washed up on beaches after storms and realised that it will probably clog up turbines and even wave power systems very easily. That could be one reason the technology hasn't taken off. Tides can be very strong in some areas but not every day in the lunar month.

I've said this many times

I think it should be mandatory for all MPs not just those in ministerial positions to live in rented accommodation on minimum wage with their family. They should use the NHS only for medical problems for all of them and have no access to help unless it was through the regular channels. I think it would be especially useful if they were required to do this from October to March.

Chance or of the Exchequer who has not accounting qualification or experience.

Armed forces minister who's never served.

The list goes on. Apparently they don't need qualifications as there's a whole team of people advising who DO have those qualifications. All the man at the top needs is the authority to say yes or no.

Feck that, he needs to understand the consequences of that yes/no decision.

Politicians of all party's appear to be nothing more than self-serving, out of touch fuckwits, with not the slightest grasp of how every day people live.

Yes, I understand why you say that.

If we continue as we are with most of the people in government not really understanding the struggles a lot of people experience then things will remain the same and I honestly believe that the majority want that. Most likely that's down to the mindset you describe.

Been heating myself rather than the house for some years now.

It wasn't brought on by the current crisis but by British Gas deciding they were going to introduce a daily standing charge. As I only used gas in winter I told them to piss off and eventually they disconnect me at the street.

I have been using a Calor Gas radiant heater near where I sit to eat and use the computers etc. Most of the time only one of the three panels needs to be lit and frequently gets turned off when I am warm enough (between 15 and 18C). If it is really cold and upstairs needs to have the chill taken off I have another Butane gas heater which I set up in the downstairs hallway to convect some heat up the stairs. The house is triple glazed and the loft is lined with insulation batts as well as under its floor. There is never a condensation problem even though I regularly dry washing indoors. My house is the last one in the area for the snow on the roof to melt!

Heating a three bedroom house for one occupant doesn't make sense, especially on a solo income.

Electric blanket in bed is my luxury with a good duvet and a red blanket thrown over the top in winter for psychological warmth. A blue one would feel much colder!

The bottled gas is still working out about £45 for four weeks. I have to shop around, though as some are now charging £50 for 15 KG refills. Will be interesting to see how the prices go from now on but I run a 3 bottle cycle and anticipate them lasting me through to early winter before paying a new price. I could probable save by using propane instead of butane but the cylinders are too big for me to handle comfortably and get a good price.

I remember when people used to put on all their clothes before boarding a flight so they didn't have to pay British Airways for extra luggage allowance. They'll be doing the same thing soon to avoid paying any extra to British Gas.

This thread also reminds me of an old saying:

Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life...

I think we look back at the "good old days" through rose tinted glasses.

An age where we were less stressed, less pressured, more innocent.

No social media, where we lived in smaller communities, with real community spirit and everyone knew their neighbours.

What we forget is the trade off. As the previous poster mentioned, massive child morbidity, a life expectancy of around 50 and things like measles, mumps, polio were rife and treatments were unheard off.

Yin and Yang.

When I was a kid the upstairs of the house was unusable in the day time from around late October to April time, the only room that was used in the evening was the living room as it was where the heat was. The realities of living in a home with little or no heating are extremely unpleasant and I don't want to go back to it.

Ye it's how I lived too. Oh the joy of waking up and frost on the inside of the windows, damp rooms, impossible to get clothes dry in winter, wearing coats in bed to try and stay warm, being rushed to hospital because I had asthma attacks because of the damp in the house Oh ye the good old days

No one in this day and age should have to worry about the basics like keeping your house warm and damp free in winter or worrying about where their next meal is coming from. It's ridiculous that it's coming to this again for so many. And I know I sure as hell don't want to go back to the "good" old days because there was very little that was good about them especially in colder weather.

I don't know what their main aims are. I guess they want all of Britain's homes to be insulated.

The fact that neither you nor I have a clear idea of what they're trying to achieve means to me that either they aren't putting their message across clearly or they're communicating it in a way that alienates people so they aren't listening or they don't actually have a clear objective and are gluing themselves to motorways while they think one up.

The point I was clumsily making is that the likes of Tom and I don't actually know what they're trying to achieve. They want to insulate Britain. Where can I find out how they would like this done, what buildings they want insulated, how they propose it's paid for, what kind of insulation they want used...that kind of thing? The average person in the street such as myself isn't going to seek this information out and I personally don't think insulate Britain are getting their message across very well. They're very clear in the information they publish themselves. Unfortunately they have little control over the information published by where the majority of the population get their information from. Their methods might be extreme but it gets people talking. Most people have heard of them, some will Google them and find their website or social media. The alternative is often just quietly shouting into a void unfortunately.

They certainly did get people talking. I don't respond well to the way they make their point. Personally I think they pissed more people off than they got on side. Most of us know that for ecological and financial reasons we need to be insulating our homes and relying less on fossil fuel, forcing us to sit on the motorway missing work and vital appointments isn't the way to encourage us to do it more quickly

"Not sure what this group wanted. Their message is not clear ?

The message ‘Insulate Britain’ is not clear?

What do these fuckers actually want ?

I don't know what their main aims are. I guess they want all of Britain's homes to be insulated.

... "

A guy came knocking several days ago trying to sell me cavity wall insulation.

I told him I don't want it as it stops the warmth from the sun on my outside brickwork from coming through into the house.

He had no answer to that!

Or the media are twisting their very clear and simple message. Their objective is literally in the name, they don't need to think one up. "

Exactly. People can choose to be ignorant and seek not to understand anything, but unless you literally don’t understand those words the meaning is crystal clear.

It's clear that they want to insulate Britain. The methods they are using to encourage me to find out why are not achieving the desired effect.

I understand why they want homes insulated, I realise that it's a matter of urgency that our homes use less fossil fuel to heat them, I'm doing the best I can with the resources I have available to me. How are their methods of bringing this to my attention going to help me to help them achieve their aims?

How much changes through polite, convenient request?

Well behaved women rarely make history and all of that.

I don't doubt that future generations will look back and criticise the likes of me. However as I said I'm doing the best I can.

I had some doorstep hawker type offering me free cavity wall insulation. They look at you with crazed eyes when you say no...

We all are. And I'm not criticising anyone, sorry. Just sort of going, how do you get someone to listen? Being polite tends to be ignored on this level

I agree but alienating people you want on your side doesn't work either.

In my opinion it's a case of approaching the problem from many sides. Education, advice, help, protest, lead by example etc

My suspicion is that this is a similar line of argument that's been made about most of the protest movements that have led to rights we now take for granted. I get why you're saying it, and I say this with no disrespect intended.

I don't think you are disrespectful .

If you note I did include protest in my list

These eco warrior types are more concerned with the environment than letting innocent people get on with their lives. These organisations should be banned immediately and every member questioned by the authorities. If they have no membership list then those believed to be associated with the group should be rounded up and questioned. They have in the main been radicalised at university by these lefty types and they should be all offered de-radicalisation therapy....

Their criticism isn't of you, it's of central government. There's only so much individuals can do and many greener methods of all sorts of things are unaffordable for many, especially in the current economic climate which is why central government need to make changes in order to make progress with environmental issues.

I looked up Insulate Britain's website as I didn't know what they were campaigning for specifically. They basically want the government to have a strategy for making public housing energy efficient. Surprisingly (not) the govt doesn't have a plan even though they're committed to reduce emissions from heating/powering homes to zero by 2050.

"Nearly 15% of the UK’s total emissions comes from heating homes" this shocked me.

I'm delighted we all live in a free, open, diverse society that capitalises on the strengths of different views, rather than stagnating and withering with just one.
