We bought the boardgame, Catan, a couple of years or so back and it's become a family favourite. We've also discovered it has quite a cult following.

Are there any fellow fans out there? Would it make a good basis for a fab social meet?

Alternatively, what other boardgames would you recommend for a good fab social? xx

I agree. It's a great game for socialising with, even if some people haven't played it before.

Will have to look up RoboRally xx

Love modern board games, but though I own Catan (it was one of the first) I've actually never played it! (I have too many like that unfortunately, including the more recent Century Spice Road). But favourites have been Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, Splendour, Paperback, the 2-player Lost Cities and Reef! We like small ones too like the City-based Ticket to Rides, Silver & Gold, Kariba and Shh!. Love them.

I think there probably is a game out there for everyone (some are co-operative etc), but if people aren't interested though what can you do? Also, they need a good teacher present I think.

If socials would require smaller fun games, Cockroach Poker is a good laugh for sure, and Skull is always recommended for pubs. 'Social' perennials are supposed to be No Thanks! and For Sale.

Owl: I thought it was Settlers of Katan or is this a version for your phones? It wouldn't be of much interest to us personally and neither would anything that brings out the worst in people such as Monopoly. Formule De was a very good board game if you enjoy F1 racing and have a technical mind. Sopwith was another which is simple but fun where each plays a fighter ace in WW1 and tries to wipe out the other side or everyone which could be good if you had the couples mixed up. HeroQuest again is simple and fun if you like swords and sorcery else there is the classic Pictionary or even Balderdash.

Enjoy x

That's always a great suggestion. However, I was thinking more of a social meet when you're trying to get to know people and decide if the next step will involve 'naked twister' xx

---Many people have a love/hate thing with Monopoly (I'm more hate - how does it *still* sell millions?) but it's generally seen as the great villain by modern boardgames because..... The 2-die 'roll-and-move' mechanism is so basic the game takes forever (and the game takes even longer if you 'house rule' and let your kids grab the bail money!), nobody knows the best way to play (which is to buy everything you are lucky enough to land on and trade!) - and worse of all, players (esp young players) have the boredom of just tagging along with still an hour to go - queue the eventual 'flying board' TM!

Yeah less competitive games would probably be best. A game called Concept has always interested me - you can leave it on the table apparently and play it over days even. It's like a 'lunch break' game apparently.

Also I've just remembered Just One! which won the big annual game award. It can be played with almost any amount of people and has pretty simple but really clever rules! -
