Urban Seagulls bring Disease

Chelmsford

Reports that seagulls are becoming urban by nesting on buildings instead of cliffs and bringing a big threat of birdflu to humans because they have evolved to have no fear of humans and contact with them. On top of this councils are being prevented from culling the gulls. Experts say they could be as dangerous as bats in the sense that they may be the source of new strains of the disease. Should we be worried?

No Tom. It's pigeons we should be observant about, especially with the potential cross over to back garden poultry.

No. They are called seagulls for a reason. They used to live by the sea but increasingly spreading inland. One theory is overfishing. They used to follow trawlers and scavenge on the scraps. As the trawlers go further and further our the seagulls wings get tired. Also these big industrial trawlers waste very little. Where once a trawlerman would gut the fish then throw the waste overboard for the seagulls. This has changed. Little is wasted on these big ships. Not even the guts ..

You will find the seagulls were here before the houses were built. They are partial to a pied-a-terre near the local refuse sites though, possibly spreading back disease we have dumped?

Really no, they are not called "sea"gulls. People call them that colloquially. You mean Herring gulls.

Tom no spciesist. He simply does not like creepy crawlies and poisonous snakes and spiders and one or two others. It is not only some animals tho. He does not like walnuts

Living on the coast a few of our buildings have them on them

The bird shit is toxic I think people would be shocked if they saw what they produce when there’s a few of them we’ve had to get specialists in to clean it

And it leaves damage behind

Also they are extremely viscous they nest on the roof of our building and attack you in car park whilst people think it’s funny they proper go for you and have drawn blood a few times
