I remember growing up there use to be power cuts all the time so my parents always had candles I am not a 100% sure but been in early 1970’s it may have been when the UK was on a 3 day working week perhaps some of our older members maybe able to confirm this.

Heat a rooom (greenhouse usually!) by putting a clay pot over a lit candle (do it in your sink or fireplace if you are gonna try it

We didn't have central heating back then, just a paraffin heater in the bedroom.

. Mine is a similar story to yours except my parents lived in a big flat in Islington where the living room and the bedroom room where in the same room sofa bed for my parents bunk beds for me and my sibling.Paraffin heater to heat up the whole room.

Use elbow grease,it burns at pretty low temperatures.

And make candles from ear wax.
