Beeston Food Bank

Reports from Beeston food bank. Not sure where Beeston is but it's all over the news. Some food bank users are asking for food that they don't need to cook, heat or refrigerate because they can't afford the fuel bills. What's going on here ?

Read the other bits of the news, Tom. The answers may lie there.

All food banks are saying the same. They're asking for donations of food that doesn't need cooking which narrows it down quite a bit.

Pick your thread topics wisely Tom ….

It is a fact that in 2022 there are people/families who will not have the funds to be able to pay for gas/electric to heat food …. Indeed if the have funds at all to pay for food. Hence the dramatic growth in the need for food banks

Have some compassion for those less fortunate please

They're not really set up to do that Tom.

There are agencies and organisations that provide not food. One charity near me provides a hot meal for homeless people every evening but they have a kitchen set up and the relevant health and safety requirements in place.

I have nothing against food banks for those who need it, but some are professional people with higher wages than me and mine. So I always wonder what some of these people are spending their money on?

"If people can't afford food why are the drug dealers so rich...strange"

Are you implying that people can't afford food because they're buying drugs? That's undoubtedly true in a minority of cases, I've seen first hand teenagers who have to use food banks be because their parents spent all their money on alcohol but the majority of people who can't afford to eat are genuinely in dire straits. In the coming years I think a lot of people who think the poor are feckless, lazy addicts will find themselves in the same queue at the food bank

Can you back your opinion with statistics? Do you know how many food bank clients have an unacceptable (to you) phone contract for instance?

It's sad to see that yet again someone will talk about a tiny minority of people who may abuse the system to try to discredit the fact there are do many people who just can't manage. We should have empathy and do our bit for the most vulnerable in society not use extreme examples about a few to discredit the plight of so many.

Trussell Trust food banks require a referral in the form of a voucher from a health professional, school, college, social worker etc. You can't just turn up at one of theirs. Some independent ones are open to all

Lots of different agencies can refer. A gp of nurse often sees people with problems indirectly connected with poverty and can refer.

There are many community larders which have sprung up lately which operate on that basis. A food bank is different and generally requires a referral.

The food bank gives out a mixed box to last three days. A community larder is where a supermarket clears out what has expired that day and anyone can help themselves but it is pot luck what there will be

Without internet and phone you wouldn’t be able to submit meter reading and you’d end up with higher energy bills. Most job applications are online. A lot of jobs need you to work from home so you’d need a phone and internet.

It always amazes me how people have the view that to need to use food banks, it means these people are spending their money on unessential items. The class system was created so every ignorant person has someone to look down on which makes them buy into the properganda the media is feeding them. As long as we are pointing the fingers at each other, no one is pointing them at the government which is exactly what they want.

I hate to break it to people but most people are in poverty due to no fault of their own. This government and country fails us all on a daily basis. We are expected to be grateful for wages that will never be in line with affordable living and because we need to work to survive, we accept this.

Don't be quick to judge the people who need help because next time it might be your hand reaching up for help.

Internet is classed as an esentual service now. For those on universal credits all / most contact is done online. Therefore needing internet. Virgin offer a package for UC customers for £15 a month. You can go online from a laptop or ipad ect. So you dont need a phone. For those who think those using UC have exspensive phones and contracts ect, they don't.

All basic costs of living are going up. Gas, electric, council tax, water, and rent. Those who have cars are also seeing an increase in fuel, road tax and insurance. Before you say cars are a luxuary, some are running around in 20 year old cars, small 1 liters. Not top of the range or new. Some need cars to get to plave of work. Not forgetting that workers on UC lose 45pence (of bennifit) for every £1 they earn over their threashold. So working more hours to earn more dosnt work. It just geys taken away.

Bottom line is, food banks are a very real need for many in the uk. Lots of food bank users are very proud people and it takes a lot for them to use them. For haters saying stop having kids you can't afford. No one can predict, they may of been able to afford when they did. However a lost job or loss of a parent can change the course of life.

Any of us could be in the suitation at any time. Treat others as you'd like to be treated.

"Tory Britain that's what's going on here.

It would happen which ever party is in power"

It's like there weren't food banks under any previous government in power.

At which point someone will say there's more under this government.

And I say, it's not a competition.

That food banks exist at all is dreadful.

"It always amazes me how people have the view that to need to use food banks, it means these people are spending their money on unessential items.

Don't be quick to judge the people who need help because next time it might be your hand reaching up for help."

Exactly. How many of on here can honestly say we have more than a month or two's rent or mortgage payment in the bank? You're only a few steps from the street yourself. Be grateful you're warm, dry and fed x

There was a Soup Hamper set up in Edinburgh in October 2020 for those struggling in the pandemic. I was one of the drivers who’d deliver soup items (selection of veg, loaf of bread & stock cubes) this helped many people. We had many people say thanks as the hadn’t eaten for a few days. These people were then offered a weeks worth of groceries to keep them going. As time went on I noticed people who were getting the initial soup hamper were people who lived in nice areas and who were working, asking if we’d bring it round when they’d finished working. One lady/couple came out and explained they’d just had their dinner but were grateful for some free food…. I explained that this was for people who couldn’t afford to eat… they said tough luck they’d asked for one and were taking it. Some people just don’t care!

It is bad isn't it for some people. I worry more about what happens when the people who can donate to foodbanks at the moment, can't in the future. There will be less to go round altogether

"One of the richest countries on the planet shouldn't need food banks, or have people homeless

Any yet, here we are.

Yeah, and it fucks me off. The comments about phones, most jobs require you to fill in forms on the phone or some form of Internet coverage. I hardly think a phone is a luxury these days

Someone much wiser than me said most people are one wage packet away from being homeless. A sobering thought.....

I heard an idiot remark a while back that he was surprised to see a homeless man with a mobile phone. I was surprised he didn't realise a house cost a lot more than a mobile phone.

What a ridiculous argument. They were created because a very small number were in severe poverty.

Now a very large percentage of our population are in poverty and it’s the governments responsibility to solve that. This government has done the opposite.

I have nothing against food banks for those who need it, but some are professional people with higher wages than me and mine.

People can't just turn up at a food bank. They need to be referred by a professional like a doctor who has assessed their situation. What proof do you have of well off people turning up ?

I think it’s social services actually. A GP wouldn’t get involved in this "

Obviously you will help more people if you buy saver stuff, so swings and roundabouts."

This is important too. A small luxury item can bring real happiness to a family.

Guys I've been reading this thread and there's a lot of confusion here, I worked with the homeless and people with addictions. There's a massive increase in people using food banks but donations to them e.g. When you're shopping and leave something in the trolleys by the exits has decreased, my local food bank is applying for gov grants so they can go shopping for the food????

The really desperate as I was at the time when they were hungry were too embarrassed to approach food banks and wanted to avoid public contact, the addicted would beg money to score or shoplift.

I ate from the Bins!!!

It's a deep and very searching question and those with weak minds often failed and without help often died from OD's as they spiralled out of control. The really desperate in our society are often hidden from plain sight, army vets etc, there's a lot out there, I talk to many of them weekly.

PS I've decided to pen a book on my experiences hopefully towards the end of the year. I've a lot to tell. ( guess you all knew that anyway) My comments are generally on the large and rambling side and I do wonder if anyone reaches the end? If you do then thank you. Love you all. Paul Xx

"Check the futures since the Tories came into power. Food bank usage doubled year on year for the first 4/5 years they were in power.

Gordon Brown lives about a mile from me. Regularly contributes to food banks, helps out at shelters etc. Doesn't get recognition, because he's not in it for that. Yeah, he's got a nice house, but it's no mansion, but he uses the NHS and thinks nothing of popping in the cooperative fir his food. Can't imagine Johnson and his cronies doing that.

No but some would have you believe the Tories are doing alright.

I think all the rises this month may finally wake them up.

I don’t think they will. It’s basically tribalism now. Backing a party like they would a football team. Rather than admit they backed the wrong horse they’d rather bury their heads in the sand because they’re doing alright.

The evidence over the past 12 years would support this. Doesn't matter what the government does. They can count on enough votes to get reelected.

"

They’re laughing at all of us but will walk the next election. All you ever hear is the alternative would be so much worse but there’s never any evidence or facts to back this up.

"Some supermarkets have bags of necessities at the front door, if you can please buy one or two with your weekly shop so those who struggle can get one.

I’m on benefits but I also have savings, I imagine I will struggle at some point too but I can stretch to a bag or so

I would say bypass the bags that supermarkets make up and buy some food inside the shop to put into the forodbank trolley. It works out more items for the same money

Yeah, and don't make it fancy stuff. Essential items, although some chocolate is good, especially for kids. What's that lady called who can make meals from supermarket essentials?

I know who you mean. I always throw some luxuries in too though , no harm in having a treat when you are down on your luck.

I know some people think if you lose your job you should get rid of anything you have bought while working and live in an empty shell so they probably think you should get rid of your dog but don't forget dog / cat food and womens products to go in the trolly

"

In all honesty the collection point at my local Tesco seems to get more dog/cat food donated than human food. Some people have more sympathy for animals than people. I try to put in both when I can but I’m newly employed and we’re still getting back on our feet.

To put people in the picture - as I’ve met many with the misconception that those living on benefits are well off - I received £558 per month for myself and my teenage daughter plus the child benefit. I kept my car going as imagined (correctly) that I’d need it to attend interviews and to get to/from my next employment.

If it wasn’t for the maintenance from my ex I’ve no idea how we’d have survived.

Thanks to the child maintenance I didn’t need to rely on food banks and community food groups. Many thousands aren’t so lucky.

Wow no wonderful no one interested I'm my thread I was going to post another light hearted one .but then saw this thread

Very interesting debate

I still maintain that essential services water and power should be owned by the country and a fair charge set for all .but on the topic of food banks if every body on fab donate whatever they can be that food or money that would help.

Morrisons do those bags. Can't see what's inside, just a cost. Always a round number. £2, £3. Never £1.75.

I assume Morrisons pocket the difference.

I was recently a "have not" and for several months relied heavily on food banks.

At that time I made a self pledge to make a foodbank donation every month when I did my first shop after pay day.

I am now thankfully a "have" and am more than happy to honour the pledge I made.

The first part sounds like the Tory vision for Britain.

Smoke from fires doesn't impact the ozone layer though. Unless you burn something that releases CFCs.

I think the ducks may disappear from local parks and nature reserves too!

However - I’m not sure how people who were never really taught to cook properly (a lot of young people/families seem to have no clue how to cook food from scratch - though hopefully that will be changing now out of necessity) are going to manage to skin/pluck a duck or rabbit and deal with the innards etc. I’m not sure I’d have a clue myself tbh.

My anger towards the people who have allowed this country to think a food bank is the normal knows no bounds. Energy companies raking in obscene profits, big buisness not paying their fair share in tax and we are told its benefit scroungers and migrants fuelling the problems. I shake my head at the apathy in this country.

I've been homeless on a number of occasions, and for the last 3 years I've been on a very low income and had to use food banks several times.

I have a cat, who has been the only company I've had during this period and as silly as it sounds that little furry bundle of company and love has been a considerable reserve of strength during an otherwise really shitty and challenging time.

Theres also a really charming recent documentary called "Year of the Dog" following the work of a charity supporting homeless people and their pets.

There's something utterly despicable about the resentment people have got people living in miserable circumstances having anything that brings them some joy or comfort.

I believe that the majority of people that use food banks are genuinely in need of help but sadly I have come across idiots who say I have come for my bag of groceries and I need you to do a referral letter for me.They then come back saying the food bank won’t let then have any food as I believe it is only 3-4 referrals a year that can be done.It could be different in other parts of the UK but not in my part of North London

I knew a homeless guy who had a horse.

I used to buy him a bottle of Jim beam every Tuesday after my dolphin training class at the blue water aquarium.

He told me that if you have a horse then you absolutely rake it in.

He did say guys with Shetland ponies tend to make more though.

Shire horses made the least, their size was intimidating.

"Those begging on the streets always earn more money if they have a dog with them and especially a thin dog like a whilpet. Mind you, to be fair, they have to put the hours in...

Tom, I love how you just randomly make absolute nonsense up.

Make nonsense up ?

I knew a homeless guy who had a horse.

I used to buy him a bottle of Jim beam every Tuesday after my dolphin training class at the blue water aquarium.

He told me that if you have a horse then you absolutely rake it in.

He did say guys with Shetland ponies tend to make more though.

Shire horses made the least, their size was intimidating.

Anecdotal fact. "

But was he hung like a horse?

That other thread didn’t cover being hung like a pony and I can’t be arsed to do the maths. I’ll assume it was small.
