By (user no longer on site) OP

I collapsed at work and ended up in Hospital for a little while, turns out I have anemia which they think is caused by my heavy periods as it was that week.

Now been prescribed Iron and rest. Feeling wiped out by it tbh.

Anyone else been prescribed Iron? How long does it take to kick in? How does it make you feel?

I have to go back to my GP and talk discuss my periods, I know he may talk about Menopause! Ffs lol

Oh and will take anything you have to cheer me up! Throw it at me please! Hugs, jokes. Whatever I'm not fussy

Thank you in advance

If you have any issue with stomach issues with the iron, try floradix. I was crazy anaemic after my first childbirth but couldn't stomach iron tablets. My brilliant midwife recommended this and it worked brilliantly.

Hope things improve!

Oh dear.. I've had a few friends in similar positions .. One if them had their contraception changed so that they didn't have a period

I hope you feel better soon.. You'll have to look up iron accelerators and inhibitors to see what easy dietary or timing of food intake changes you can make x

Are you on something like 300mg ferrous sulphate?

As I had bariatric surgery, I have to keep an eye on my bloods & sometimes gey a bit low in Iron. Taking the high dose supplements can start having an effect between 1-4 weeks, but check the best way to absorb it, with vit. C is a good way, also not close to a drink containing caffeine. There are other recommendations but can't remember them!

The tabs will affect your tummy, unfortunately...I'll not go into details on here!!

Take a look inside your lower eyelid- it'll probably be pretty white at the moment, but should start to pink up as your body starts responding xx

After i was born my mother had Anaemia and her doc told her to drink Guinness as it was a good source of iron, my then 10yr old brother thought it was a bottle of pop and took 1 to school to have at break time... which led to an awkward conversation with his teacher.

If you dont like the taste of it i recommend trying Guinness shandy as its much nicer

This is what I was told to take as low in iron, even without period, luckily not reached anemia stage. It helps with tiredness sometimes but it’s definitely keeping my iron levels up

Thank you & yes, the weightloss surgery helped me drop 10st, so I'll happily take the occasional need for iron tabs in exchange!!!

The tough bit is dealing with the unsettled tummy, but that will hopefully improve as your body adjusts. I'm amazed you didn't feel knackered if your iron was that low!!!

Hope you see some improvement soon xx

Hi and hopefully you'll be up and active soon.

Both of us have had low iron PC due to the same as you and O following meds after time in hospital.

We've both been given ferrous fumerate, twice a day and three times a day. It takes a few weeks though that depends on your general health and diet. Some forms of contraception "can" help but it can go either way. Coil can get heavy for a bit then lighten up though it can go the other way. Same has been said about the pill but it depends on the type.

If you can check your blood results take a look at your vitamin B levels too though if you have heavy periods then this is unlikely to be a symptom.

I have b12 injections as I used to have heavy periods and go dizzy a lot (I basically gave up leaving the house and living to avoid the fainting)

Depending on your age I'd recommend a hysterectomy, I'd been asking for 25+ years and they made me try two other minor surgeries before the hysterectomy but honestly it was the best thing for me

I'd had to give up work, as my periods were irregular and basically taking over my life but the difference has been amazing

Glasgowish

Similar happened to me although I did not end up in hospital. Dr phoned me at home to say my blood was so low she was surprised I was still standing. Heavy periods were to blame which I had thought to be normal due to my age. Iron tablets helped within several days and I had a coil fitted which was a godsend. Hope all turns out well for you too.x
