We probably all understand how species is defined but how would you define race?

What is your race?

What does race mean to you?

I just happened to be born into it.

It's not a word I use other than if we talk about a nation or tribe of people.

The French, Germans, Brits etc

IF an individual has ancestory overseas, but was born here..he's a Brit. Simple

It is not always immediately obvious to see someone's religion. My paternal grandmother was not happy that her son married a protestant when they were catholics but she always referred to me as the coolie gal and would 'suggest' I stay out of the sun as it would make me darker! Never a comment on me attending the CofE church.

What an interesting question requiring a complex answer.

I see race or ethnicity as something whcih is self defined and therefore I would ask other people how they define themselves rather than applying MY perception on what they are.

I see myself primarily as white European - I have several nationalities in my ancestry hence making it difficult to give priority to one over the others.

When chatting to people (both in and outside the scene) I am interested in their cultural background and ethnicity as I find diversity truly fascinating. I have always had "international" multi-cultured friendship groups going back to uni days and before. It was a natural progession from childhood as my family quite naturally faciliated this.

At work we have a category which is called race/ ethnicity and people are encouraged to self define. We are not allowed to complete this for them. Perhaps that is where the misunderstanding comes from.

You managed to hit the nail on the head, we are all members of the human race.

Nationality, colour, religion are all up to a point decided by a person, race is determined by evolution

I've already said I would rather not use race but it is the term we have for what Granny correctly defines as the characteristics you have genetically at birth.

However, when you have 'races' mixing it get confusing to have categories assingned to you. I will always be defined as Indian/Asian (of some sort). That is a large part of my genetic heritage. It's not all of it, even in my immediate family, let alone my recent discovery that we also have a bit of Viking.

Maybe, just maybe that is where the confusion starts when people are of mixed race to some degree and I can see why the term "race" may not always be helpful. Perhaps the self defining of ethinicity as we use at work is better in those instances?

I tick a different box each time, depending on my mood that day. If there is no good reason for collecting the information (and I believe in monitoring to help ensure equality for the future) then I tick 'other' and list everything!

I was bullied quite bad as a child and I've had every mafia joke and comment thrown at me, because of this I used to lie about where I was from as a child to stop the jokes and comments, I don't as an adult I just turn their jokes back on them and make them look stupid by faking a over the top laugh and saying something like "good one never hear a mafia joke before well done"

Thank you all for you're comments, some very good posts here and I enjoyed reading them.

It's interesting to see that some feel the need to belong to a defined race whereas some see the word and 'idea' of race as a 'false' creation designed to divide us. Some use it to define others, some to define or differentiate themselves.

For me it's one of those words and concepts that the more you think about it the more it seems to unravel.

I was born in one of the former colonies of UK when it was still under British rule, and would list myself as "Oriental" or "Chinese" if one or the other is available on the survey form, otherwise I would tick the "Asian" box.

I am a first generation immigrant of this country, which I have adopted as my home ever since I set foot on it over 30 years ago.

I consider "race" as more to do with the genetic make up of a group of people, who shared common ancestry many many years ago.
