"The fact that the Academy are investigating says real. Whilst I don't advocate violence, I also think Chris Rock was well out of order with making the "joke" he did. Totally agree" I agree too the issue now is the Academy need to take the moral high ground ...will they take the Oscar away from Will Smith ? Can the Academy been seen to condone violence whether Will Smith was justified or not in his actions ...time will tell.

"I think it was real. There is a lot of discussion whether it was justified though. Rock made a joke about her lack of hair, which would possibly could be laughed off, but she has alopecia. So he was right to stand up for her, but was the slap too much? " I don't want to justify violence. Chris Rock has made questionable jokes about Jada Pinkett Smith in the past too, apparently. So it's not the first time.

"Real or fake? Thinking real, next....." I think you are about 18 hrs and 3 full threads late to this conversation… All I will say is if I was Chris Rock I wouldn’t talk about what happened… and Netflix can cough up 25-50 million dollars for a 1 hr special… and he can then go to town!!! And we will all watch it….And it will be epic!!!!

"Unacceptable over reaction by Will Smith. In my view, his joke was complimentary, as she does look stunning - they are (or were) good friends. Will laughed initially. Then changed his mind. Was he goaded into it? Or just toxic masculinity protecting his property? Jada talks openly about every aspect of her life, health, sex life on her TV show. I'm sorry, but it comes with the territory. I'll bet she's laughed at many similar jokes from Chris Rock over the years. Sadly, her hubby has now made everything about "the slap". His first Oscar overshadowed. Oh, and their kids were there. One of them tweeted later in support of the action "And that's how we do things!" I thought the days of telling your kids it's ok to hit people were long gone ...." Spot on!

Joke was in poor taste but would have been much more powerful if he'd just spoken rationally about it and used his platform to call Chris Rock out rather than hitting him...

"Will Smith handled that badly. No way should you assault someone because they verbally said something you didn’t like. It just gives people the impression that is ok to be violent to people if they something off the cuff. What gets me is that they should have escorted him off the premises. Instead they let him collect his Oscar, and make some pathetic excuse about “protecting his family”, which was some toxic bullshit. Got to give it to Rock he remained professional after. It takes guts to continue even after being assaulted like that. Like what Michelle Obama said, If they go low, you go high. Looks like Smith went low, Rock went high. " ironic really give their relative statute. (Can we do height jokes? Is being short a medical condition? Is snow white going to bitch slap me?)

"Also, Chris Rock was there doing his job. He's paid to make jokes, likely from a script the academy knew of in advance. I'd hate to attend a comedy show with anyone here who thinks Smith was in the right for assaulting someone over a joke, regardless of its content. Does the severity of your implied butthurt gauge how far he can go violence wise. If you really hurt his wife's feelings can he use a weapon? Absolute joke of a situation and to be expected from a family that have clearly no grounding in reality. If he had treated the joke with contempt. It would be over with. Now he's made a fool of himself and his wife is now the butt of many more jokes everywhere. I now want a comedian who can fight to make similar jokes publicly or in Smith's presence repeatedly just to see how he reacts " Chris Rock is a docile guy, if it was anyone else he wouldnt have done it. He knew it. I honestly think if he did that to Rickey Gervais, Rickey would have laid him out. The joke is he looks so much weaker now. This Will Smith appears less confident, less masculine than the Fresh Prince.

"Real or not the little dick did deserve it. I’m anti bullying full stop. I don’t see verbal abuse being any different from physical one. Will had no choice but to protect his women. You want to make a joke that’s fine but don’t damage or play on other’s feelings " What exactly was he protecting his woman from and that is such an archaic statement. He had plenty of choices in that moment, His behaviour is inexcusable.

They just want to buy time while things die down and the spin can be put out there. On the punishment front, Smith should face the cops in the way any of us would if we publicly attacked a guy like that. But there is a real issue the Academy will struggle with if they decide to take back his Oscar as a punishment. What about the likes of Weinstein? While Weinstein still has an Oscar (+ various others for his organisation) how the hell can it be justified to take back an Oscar for a slap?

Not particularly, it was an aged reference that like I said would have been forgotten about in minutes. However, Will, as a comedian has also made jokes about alopecia so he has zero moral high ground. He's an insecure little man who wouldn't attempt violence against someone he didn't think he could bully.

"Thing is, if Smith had simply said “not cool” at the time then Rock would have looked a dick. Then Smith could have made a powerful speech about his film and finished off with a Rock put down like trying to embarrass his wife shame on you etc and the whole place would have erupted in supportive applause. Instead he made a long winded speech that was half about the film and half about what he had just done. It cast a cloud on the celebration of the film. And when he finally got his Oscar he overshadowed it by his behaviour. And that will be what his Oscar will be remembered for. And I think that’s a shame. That said, I understand his wife has been the butt of some other award ceremony jokes and maybe he had just had enough of the shit. Push someone far enough and they snap. I think Rock and Smith both need to look at their behaviour and learn from it." I agree, I think it was Rock who made jokes about the pair previously Any 'comedian' who resorts to insulting others to get cheap laughs just is not funny IMHO You just don't know what goes on behind closed doors and I know I would be devastated to lose my hair as I'm proud of it and it epitomises me....If someone made fun of me publicly for it I'd be devastated But Smith shouldn't of slapped him.

"She should put a wig on like most woman who go through chemotherapy and get on with it Why should she have to do anything? Rock should have kept his mouth shut. Do you think that's a valid reason for Rock being assaulted?" Firstly, what does A have to do with B here? My comment was about Jada wearing a wig and the fact she shouldn't have to. Secondly, as far as im concerned, if you talk shit about a man's wife, you brought her husbands wrath on yourself. Now that dosent make the assualt valid, I'm just saying Smiths anger is understandable under the circumstances. Rock crossed a line but so did Smith. They both look foolish now and both parties are in the wrong.

" If you want to live your life in the public eye then you have to accept the fact that your life is going to be scrutinised in such a way. She publicly made a big deal in the press about Will being snubbed for concussion, that's the extent of the previous jokes I saw. Standard current affairs comedy. Likely blown out of proportion now though, like the GI Jane comment being reduced to being about her medical condition when It seemed to me to be a comparison between Hollywood stars who had a shaved head at one point or another. I'm sure seeing the old footage of her husband making alopecia jokes is comforting though
