Yes, the majority can. I never realised so many people were unable to do this and just faked it when told to imagine something, thinking something was wrong with them. Comes under the very wide umbrella of being neurodiverse.

Interestingly (for me) I can do what you describe with buildings and road layouts. If I think about them I get a sort of image in my head, a bit like the patterns you see when your eyes are closed, but organised. I get nothing at all when I try to conjure up images of people.

Until recently I genuinely thought it was just a figure of speech and that those people that said they could see loved ones were just being poetic.
