Moaning Friends ?

I dont' mean the way we all moan about things that have happened.

I DO mean professional moaners.

I have two friends who moan and complain constantly, one of them telling me the same thing over and over and over and over.

I told one of them it was enough already! and they said , 'that is what friends are for ' ...... fuck me

is it ?

I think a friend should be able to hold space for another if they are able to, but no on a permanent basis.

I a have a mixture of negative and positive friends, this is the only way I can balance them out. Can't take the doom and gloom constantly as it would affect my mindset negatively

I’m happy to listen to friends moan and complain but there comes a point that I ask, what are you going to do about it? If it’s nothing then shut up about it

Exactly !

I don't even mind the moaning being for ever if it's short.... e.g. someone grumbling about their day/job/relationship but when it goes on for fucking hours or the whole of a get together.......... ffs! Makes me want to moan.

I had (had being the operative word) a friend who moaned the whole damn time. This went on for years. All offers of help, suggestions of remedies, requests for her to seek professional help went unheeded. Eventually for the sake of my sanity I ended the friendship, if you could call it that.

I had a friend like that.

Moaned about her kids and lodger constantly.

She cried when we went away with another friend because she couldn't join in on a conversation we were having. It wasn't that long of a conversation.

couple, us we him her.

Well as "that" friend I can relate to both camps.

I suffer quite badly from depression and anxiety.

I work on my own pretty much all day and don't get to talk to anyone much.

My wife and I jools work long hours and shattered when we get home.

Part of dealing with my depression is vocalising my concerns.

So when I see people it comes across as me moaning.

I try very hard to not do it and hide behind humour.

Unfortunately I am destined to be one of those people who has a black cloud hanging over my head all the time.

I can sympathize with people for not wanting to be around me and understand them avoiding my company.

I don't even like me so I don't know why others might.

Needless to say I haven't got many friends.

In fact I can count them on two fingers.

I'm sorry

Professional hurdle placers. A problem for every solution.

No. Its not. Its perfectly acceptable to set limits within friendships. If it is affecting your MH then you are well within your rights to tell them. Especially true if you have offered advice and they reject it to carry on moaning.

Hello. Having battled my own demons I wanted to share that I believe there is a while world of difference between voicing concerns (especially if you are aware where they are coming from) and endless moaning. It seems you have the awareness, can I suggest you kick off any relases with "I need ten minutes just to vent out loud. I'd really appreciate your time just to listen". I personally think many people struggle with hearing moans as they feel an obligation to help improve the other person. Removing that feeling (or even knowing listening is tej help you need) may make it easier for all.

If there is this level of awareness not only of the predicament but its effect on friends then perhaps counselling would be a viable option. It would allow the expressing of concerns and may also arrive at different strategies to cope more effectively.

agreed. Profession help is massive in this. I was seeing this as complementing such help. Sometimes a moan to a friend is all that is needed. It's doing it in a way that respects both sides. Something the OPs friends seems to ignore! (To bring it back to thread)

Fortunately my two friends aren't moaners. I've got my mum for that, who never shuts up with her negativity and moaning. How about a thread for Moany Mums?

land of make believe

When with my friends we limit our moaning to 30 mins, maybe a little longer, usually divided by whoever is there(unless of course something big is going on)for this very reason. Noone wants a miserable friend or to be that one.

Socialising is about fun.

If I feel like I couldn't muster the effort to be fun I stay in.

I have good friends because I am a good friend and sometimes you have to know when you are not good company.

xx

It's very hard when people are drains and cannot see the positive. I'm really good at helping people to feel positive and happy, but it completely wipes me out if it's persistent and i dread seeing them after a while and minimise contact

I think the adult way to tackle it, is to mention that the persistent negativity is impacting you /your friendship...

Perhaps agree they get 10 mins to vent /rant, with no input.. Then the topic is 'put to bed' for the rest of the time?

I sometimes do contract work at a company I worked for years ago. There's a shift manager there who was a real moaner back then but has got a lot worse over the last decade. Still moaning about the same things he was 10 years ago
