Having enhanced breasts but a small bottom half means that buying bikinis can be a bit of a pain (unless I can choose the top and bottom separately).

So I’ve bought a sewing machine and I’m going to have a go at making my own.

Anyone got any tips? I know it won’t be easy at first but I’m hoping with practice….

I don't know how to sew but if you have bigger boobs, please don't forget that when you lean forward to do the sewing

Not ever done sewing myself other than socks. I'd say get odd materials to practice. Just go for it and YouTube will help. Good luck

I suppose there would be some good YouTube tutorials to guide you step by step how to do it. Perhaps try it first with any old piece of cloth that you won't miss and then when you feel comfortable, move onto your bikinis. Good luck

thread the needle, pull it though the foot. load the bobbin pull that though as well. make sure its not in reverse and off you go. getting the tension right is the dicky bit

I’m not sure a bikini is the best first item to make. Stretchy fabrics can be tricky. Make try something else first.

I hate to be a party pooper but I've made swimwear and you need at least an overlocker and a sewing machine. Professionally they use 3-4 different machines. Sewing thread is rigid and not very compatible with swimwear.

If you do decide to give it a go, my tip would be to get decent lining unless you're using a really dark colour.

Stretch fabrics are pretty tricky for a beginner, and as lacy said it's not a simple one row of stitch on items like swimwear x

I buy tops and bottoms separately. Unless you have access to reasonably priced fabric I'd say that in the long run it would work out cheaper to buy ready made. Measuring and fitting is key with something like a bikini top and you'd probably have to adapt a pattern.

Having said all that I'm all for having a go. Have a look at patterns and go for something in the easy section

If it's stretchy material, you'll need to buy ballpoint needles otherwise a universal sewing needle will either pucker up on the lower or upper tension (practice that in a sample of fabric first - there should be NO loops of threads if there are, then adjust tension) zig zag stitch is often used on stretchy fabrics to allow "give". Straight stitching on stretchy fabric may actually break.

I agree with what others have said, for a novice, working with stretchy fabric or making a bikini as a first project isn't for the feint hearted.

You don't necessarily need stretchy fabric. Decent cotton lined would work. If you made a halter neck with triangle cups it would involve minimal shaping and only one clasp at the back. If you just made it to the at the neck and back you would cut down on measuring too

I'm a seamstress, I would use a stretch fabric like a lycra. As it would accomdate more if you have fliud retention in the heat. Plus it will wick away sweat better. Bi kinies are not just 2 triangles, you need darts to give the shape. A broken Zigzag stitch, which is on most moderen machines is a must. It's a dotted line shaped in a zigzag on the settings. As it stretches and gives while wearing. Don't worry about tention, most machines have this preset. Just make sure the bobbin is the correct way round in the machine.

If you've brought a patteren, it will tell you every thing you need to know. Read everything carfully. Don't skip any parts, and re read the bits before cutting. Practice, practice and practice. If something is not working walk away. Do something else, then go back to it later.

Used to sew alot back in the day start with simple garments so u get used to patterns etc as bikini quite a tricky first ! My 48 year old still remembers the clothes I used to make her! Ra ra skirts were her fave back in the 80s! Did home work alot making first dolls dresses for a factory in Canterbury latter pencil skirts and those big satin skirts we all wore back in the day to order for a lady with a market stall alot of hours for not alot but loved it! Good luck and hope to see the results of your work x
