I think that's what puts me off having kids altogether. As much as I would love them, I can't imagine how much they would miss out on if a relationship became untenable

The relationship ending isn't necessarily the problem as much as the character of the people which I think is what they meant. My parents split up but both continued to go above and beyond to both be as involved as possible in our lives. I had both my parents for Christmas until I was a teenager and for every birthday until I was an adult. My dad still had a key to my mum's house and used to get us from school and stay with us at hers until she got back from work. Obviously your parents going through a divorce is never fun to go through but I never felt like I missed out on anything because of it and as an adult I'm super grateful for how they both handled things.
