Was listening to Jezza Vine today (well actually was Vanessa Feltch standing in) and many of the respondants were round about my mam's age and they all said how terrifying it was, they were sure the world was ending etc.

When I popped round mam's later on, I asked her what she remembered about it - "Fuss over nothing" she said "I knew I wasn't going to die, your Grandma always told me only the good die young and I'm still here aren't I?"

At least it led to Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Without nukes we'd never have had that great song.

Newcastle and Gateshead

i think it was a huge deal for those people in the carribean at the time and it was one of the things my mum talked about from when she was young....

people down there didn't have a clue who was going to flinch first...

It had a huge long term effect. 50 years of funding big armies and paying for our own nucular threat. Just imagine if all that money had gone into social welfare how much better things could have been.

I was 7 at the time and i remember it as clear as day i really thought we were all going to die in our homes ..i went to a village school and i remember the air raid sirens being resurrected and sounded just in case .for a few days there was a real air of doom in the world ...and as records show we came a whole lot closer than people ever realised !!!!...Iguess there arent many fabsters who have a personal memory of that time ?????

In retrospect, no more than a pathetic cock sizing competition.

But no doubt very frightening at the time for real people.

At school during the crisis we did not have a basement so we had to practice our few minutes warning by getting underneath our desks for protection.
