Road tax

I'm sure many of you, like me, have multi vehicle insurance cover.

I own 2 motorbikes and have this.

But why we have a multi vehicle road tax? Only one of my bikes is taxed, the other sorned. At £96 each, I can't afford to tax the other one, which is the one I wanted to ride yesterday.

I mean, I can only ride one at a time can't I!!

Providing both have mot's, why can't we switch the road tax to the one we choose to ride?

As a cyclist, please don’t shoot me down I may be able to help.

It’s not road tax and hasn’t been for years. It’s based upon emissions and that’s why it varies in price from vehicle to vehicle and none for cyclists despite using the roads.

The transference between vehicles wouldn’t be easy as it would need to assume they all fit within the same bracket which may not be the case

Because that's not how it works.

Multi car still insures both (or more) vehicles.

Vehicle excise duty nowadays is about checking you are insured and MOTd as well as the tax revenue.

Yep pure money. Same as a mot and insurance starts and ends on any day of month. But road tax starts on 1st of month even if you tax it on 21st and ends at end of month even if you sorn it on the 2nd. Called gov rip off.

Unless someone hasn't already posted it, here goes.

You don't pay road tax as such, you pay a vehicle emissions tax. This is based on how much emissions your vehicle gives off.

So you still need to pay for each vehicles you own, unless they are SORNed.

You could go do the line of getting a tax exempt bike, like a nice RG500 2 stroke, or an electric one.

In Ireland if you have two vehicles you can of course switch insurance but the company charges for this , Road tax here is a different kettle of fish , tax is only allowed per vehicle , the reg of the vehicle is registered.

It's just called road tax. Road tax was abolished years ago. Its just another form of revenue from drivers!

It is a vintage bike, sad to say but it is tax exempt. Apart from the crappy insurance mileage side of owning a vintage car, I would definitely have a car and bike.

I was told that I could only do something like 10,000 miles a year, anything more than that and I was not covered.
