"Ten per cent of accidents at Parkrun are dog related. Some disgruntled runners want to start a splinter group called Barkrun. Apparently it's the leads that are the issue. They are trip hazard. Some runners are up in arms " These runners must be un-coordinated muppets then.

"They haven't banned dogs. They've banned running with a waist lead and instead say people should use a handheld lead. " So much for my last post, looks like I got it wrong; I thought waist leads were the ones to use. Ignore my last post folks... Sorry.

So much for my last post, looks like I got it wrong; I thought waist leads were the ones to use. Ignore my last post folks... Sorry." The problem they have is that waist leads encourage the dog to run in front and it can then move side to side and potentially trip people. They want a hand held lead so the runner can keep them by their side and reduce the chance of accidents. It's debatable that it will improve things but it's likely the parkrun insurers have said something so they have to make a change.

"It's all over news. Dogs will be banned from Parkrun in April.. There will be far fewer accidents as a result I imagine" As said above someone with comprehension skills has clarified the “ban” (rule change) so a blanket ban in dogs is not “all over the news”

"I’ve never had an issue on a Parkrun with fellow runners dog leads. I do however have problems with dog owners whose dogs are on extendable leads not being in control of their pet. Nearly every run or if I’m out on the bike, I have to swerve or brake because a pooch has shot out in front of me" Extended leads are a bloody nightmare and should be banned! Whoever thought designing a lead like that must have been insane!

"dogs won’t be banned from parkrun in April, the leads that go around the owners waist will be, people will be able to continue to run with their dog on a short hand held lead" That’s even more dangerous - what happens is the dog isn’t fully trained and doesn’t have a good recall? What happens if the dog launches or pulls the lead out of the owners hand? How is it possible to ban a lead that goes around the owners waist?

Many dogs including my own (Dog bless her) are trained in parks, either on a long lead (not a flexible one) so the owner is still in control while doing distance training (sit stay/down stay/or stay in a standing position) or if dog is at the right stage in its training, off lead training.

"Tom would love a guy who lives by me, he has his dog on a lead tied to his bike and they can be seen cycling and running around all the local pathways at speed. I'm not an accident / risk expert but I'm not going to be surprised if the above setup ends badly at some point. " Dog has probably been trained extensively to run beside the bike & not away from it

"I do wonder if all dogs should be muzzled in public and a hefty fine to any owner not complying with it I’d agree to that." Absolutely not! Dogs that have shown to be aggressive towards either people or other dog, absolutely yes, but not on the whole. I get that some people are afraid of dogs (one of my sisters is) but if you go into a park where dogs are allowed, you have to accept that there will be dogs there. On this thread though, having just learned what a “parkrun” is…. Then yes perhaps dogs & owners can gracefully accept that there is an event going on regularly in the same place, same time every week, and take their dog to the beach instead. Or other park/country park/area instead. Let and let live

"I once saw a lady riding a horse who also had control of a dog on a lead.. only seen that once though. I wondered what would happen if the lead got tangled in the horses legs or if the dog saw a rabbit and bolted whether it would have pulled the lady off the horse and then there would be a dangerous horse on the loose... " All that’s missing was the falcon on her arm

"Last time I did a park run I went straight after work. I was running late so didn’t have time to change out of my uniform. I did it in a record time because around 30 dogs were chasing me and one even bit my arse. No wonder they want to ban the little bastards. They ripped the Royal Mail logo right off my pants "

" Then that woman riding her horse was a fecking idiot. I’ve had horses, I’ve taken my dog (RIP) out on hacks with me (on the farm estate) but not on a lead FFS, always loose, she followed verbal commands, we’d see deer, rabbits, hares, sheep, not once would she break away for a sly chase, but she did a couple of times get in the horses’ way, but he’d just step over her

"Should this horse woman with a dog on a lead be reported. But who to?" Probably not, unless you know who she is and where she lives, and if she was putting any unnecessary suffering on animals - the best you could have hoped for would be the dog giving the horse a fright (horses are flight animals) who would undoubtedly jumped sideways or reared or both, dumped the rider, and possibly have landed on her, either with his body or a hoof (either equally sore) and galloped off…. Causing mayhem elsewhere

"I was asked not to attend a Parkrun because I would be doing it in a wheelchair. The exact wording was "a wheelchair would get in the way". No matter, I went to a different Parkrun (less flat and with mud/grass/hills instead of the tarmac) and did 44 mins. I wasn't the last person to finish either. Take that, running people " Wow! Well done kn the 44 mins. But even more wow ( in a bad way) on their attitude. What a bunch of *******!
