Facial hair on men

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

I was flicking through bumble and I flicked through 32 profiles before I got to a man without a beard/facial hair. (Yes, I counted!). I don’t mean stubble, I mean more than that.

As someone who isn’t into men with facial hair, I’m thinking that this is the trend at the moment.

Is this something that anyone else has noticed?

I think generally younger men or at least men around my age have keep facial hair and women around our age like it. I see mostly clean shaven older guys on fab to be fair so maybe it is a more recent trend. Probably a few years old now.

That's because for the most part (always exceptions) ages 40+ is when facial hair has hit its peak. So many guys who just could not pull off a beard at all when younger are suddenly able to grow very strong and full beards around the age of 40. For some it's the ability to do what they have not been able to do before. For most the beard makes them look far more "attractive", it changes the face shape and gives most guys a much stronger looking jaw.

Its a trend, but its also nothing new at the same time. For some it's a fashion accessory, for others they just like the natural growth - not all look after and take care of their beard though.

Most, in a couple of months will end up following the new trend and going back to clean shaven or stubble.

Beards take time to grow, most may just be seeing what they can do and how far they are able to reliably pull it off. That takes 6 months to a year to get the actual effect. Even longer to make sure it is extremely healthy.

"Short stubble for me, I hate having full beard as too scratchy and irritating"

Beard oil generally fixes that up, at the very least reduces the irritation in the initial first couple of "itchy weeks".

After that the hair softens and is is quite nice to have.

We were just having that conversation this morning. In our hotel every single guy and I mean every single guy had a beard at breakfast apart from Jenson. He joked that he was clearly missing a trend before adding that as he struggles to grow hair on his head these days he would just look like his head was on upside down.

"I love to see a masculine jawline and lovely lips, shame guys are hiding them. Obviously it’s up to them to have whatever they like on their face."

The majority (not all) of guys with beards will likely have weaker jawlines. A beard can make any jawline seem stronger, even on those with strong jawlines.

As for lips, I'm not quite sure which guys are growing their beards so that it covers their lips but that would certainly be uncomfortable and irritating for themselves if they are.

Facial hair is that much of a trend that you are now seeing it in the Army….something which would never have been accepted regardless of the reasons (skin irritations through shaving etc)!!

I have to admit I prefer clean shaven but because the Army has told me for years I CANT have one….I will grow one upon retirement

Will it stay….I’m not so sure!!!

Personally I hate that it has become a trend. I have had a beard on and off for most of my adult life and my current one for many years.

You can tell when something is a trend when you look at social media influencers and it’s only been the last couple of years that they have started sporting facial hair.

It’d you are going to have a beard, have one because you want one not because everyone else is.

I've always had facial hair.. trendy or not, doesn't matter to me.

I have it pampered every three or so months. It's not very long right now, but I've had it longer.

I couldn't imagine having a smooth chin for an extended length of time me..

Definitely not for me.

Facial hair has been in fashion for a long time now.

I do think a beard ages a man, which isn't necessarily a positive.

I prefer clean shaven generally but have no objection to a soft beard. Stubble looks good but feels awful.

How dare men want to personalise their look in a natural way Grrrrr....

Maybe we should make a start on false nails and hair extensions next? Just stop letting anyone change their look because of someone's personal preference

At no point in this thread has anyone said that men shouldn’t or can’t. In fact, it’s been said repeatedly (by myself and others) that men are obviously free to do whatever they like with their own faces.

Ladies are allowed to find beards attractive or not just like guys prefers blondes or brunettes.

At first I was unshaven as we had a bereavement in the family and as is custom / tradition the men don’t shave until after the 40 day memorial.During the 40 days at work a lot of the women said they liked it as well as some of the men.On Saturday on a night out with friends it seems the ladies like it apparently salt and pepper is popular now a days.I have decided to keep it for now.

Beards are beautiful, different shapes, sizes and colours. My other half as a huge beard & said he believes a lot of the trend comes from TV shows & companies pushing 'ambassadors' to sell products, he gets free products sent due to his beard size and social media, and has people DM'ing all the time with stubble trying to sell and give beard advice haha. Anyway I'd rather ride and oil a man's beard with my juices xx

Culturally for me, guys tend to keep beards anyway. I look 5 years old without. Happy to post a beard and no beard face pic if someone wants to start that thread

There were used to only be a select few beard products but now even the big name beauty companies do them. I think keeping a beard now is more accessible for people in some ways. When I worked in retail, I used to get much older men asking me what I use on my beard etc and back then there wasn’t much in high street stores (beard oils, balms, etc). Online stores which did sell products were really expensive.

I don't know if men are becoming more feminine....the fact men are encouraged to buy more cosmetic products is more to do with the power of the marketing machines. Money to be made. Must be really fucking up their after shave sales though.

I agree its not a negative, but I'm not quite sure how it's feminine exactly?

Vikings for example, in the most basic of labeling possible, are "manly" men are they not?

Would go to great lengths when it came to pride in their hair and appearance. Even using, for the age, certain products to style and nourish their hair and skin.

Its certainly not something I'd call neither a masculine nor feminine trait - it's a notion that society has twisted to be perceived as something men "shouldn't" do over the years. Something some other cultures found to be strange to do such things as these "barbaric" men.

Re skin care. My thoughts are that undamaged skin may be subtle (and not perfect) signs of "success". And that is evolutionary appealing. Kinda like the way people used to make themselves pale to show they could afford to stay inside and not work in the fields.

In beards: I think fellas have found this is a great way of disguising some femine jawline features in a way that looks masculine. I've heard stories of women feeling tricked when their new guy has shaved (may be made up internet stories). It's nature's make up for men!!

Apologies not beards or long hair but having more products than your partners and taking hours to get ready can seem to be going to fat but then again when I had long hair it took 30 mins to wash and dry it haha

I agree, beards have never really gone out of fashion. I personally like them. I find a certain length of stubble just makes my face come out in a rash. Not a deal breaker is you’re a guy with stubble though, I’d just need to remember the concealer or people would ask questions!

I think the past 2 years of wearing face masks resulted in me getting a bit lazy with the face shaving. I tried the beard route but, it seemed to age me by about 10 years. Now i kinda like the short 2 day stubble look. Although, the hairs seem a combination of brown, grey & ginger!

The one thing I find funny is beards are referred to as a trend (I've done so myself in the past), yet the none natural way of clean shaven is never referred to as a trend. It is just accepted as what should be normal.

Take a look at Greg Berzinsky, there are a few comparison pictures of him with and without his magnificent facial fuzz.

There are a few other examples of men that just look better with a beard, and for most guys that is the main reason we grow it, we look and feel much better with it.

Dan C bearded (harder to find him with clean shaven or stubble, but a pic does exist)

Eric Bandholz is another example of just looks better with the beard.

Just around the corner

It’s fascinating how trends like this change.

Back in the 90s focus groups suggested that bearded men were considered ‘untrustworthy’ and as a result the various beardy Labour MPs were asked to reconsider their facial topiary. They all refused, and it obviously didn’t affect their results in ‘97.

Fast forward to 2022 and you’re hard pressed to find a man who doesn’t wear a full set.

Just a pity when there's a hot man/couple we come across but then a super long beard - 1 of million other challenges to the 3-or-more-somes attraction.
