Wow, Uk has finally paid it's 400 million debt?, So now they have suddenly released our 2 detainees they have kept for years. Just shows if UK paid it years ago this would not have happened.

It’s not as simple as that.

The UK won’t pay debts while a country is essentially holding its citizens hostage.

To pay it would open the door to every country just arresting UK citizens to hold for ransom.

The UK never disputed the debt, they always maintained that it would be paid but not while they are holding prisoners.

The two aren’t directly linked just concurrent.

It wasn’t paid to release prisoners, it was paid after release, as was always the case.

It’s a bit more complicated than that

They paid it as they wanted links to oil etc. Is this correct. Either way they were released when they got the money...

BRIDPORT

I think the settling of the debt was more to do with UK wanting better relations with Iran with a view to accessing oil supplies as an alternative to heavy reliance on Russia.

A delegation is also in talks with Saudi Arabia to secure supplies, that would be the Saudi Arabia with such an excellent human rights track record.
