I would say for the majority of women (or men) wearing one it is simply a fashion jewellery item

G's ex often wore an ankle bracelet (especially on the beach) and she was very, very vanilla, so they really don't mean anything. Years ago only prostitutes wore them, apparently, so that's probably why they have a 'naughty' association.
