Reports that scientists want to drill the deepest hole in history to reach the molten magma and harness the energy .

Surely this will just end up as a man made volcano which will be impossible to cap with molten laver spewing everywhere... I think they are tampering with things they dont understand. This will not end well...

Depends where they drill Tom. The top of the mantle is pretty viscous in places.

Iceland didn't have to drill very deep to do theirs. Same principle.

It could release even more noxious gases into the atmosphere

It's that or use humans as batteries, Tom.

That's a ~200km deep hole, considering the deepest point drilled to is just over 12km it's a long way off.

As for gas release, a tiny hole would release such a small amount compared to all active volcanoes on earth it's not worth worrying about.

He's been watching too many crappy science fiction films.

Imagine snapping the drill bit half way down, bugger to get out

I love lava but do agree it should probably stay underground.

How far down do you reckon you got to drill for the temperature to reach 100 degrees c?

Well it must be like those new central heating units which bury pipes deep under the soil.

I am one of the few people who have ever set foot on Iceland. I have seen it for myself. Fumes coming off the hot pools going straight up onto the atmosphere ..

I’d be a bit laid back about it all if it wasn’t the fact they wanted to “drill the deepest hole in history”.

That kind of bold statement has a habit of biting you in the ass.
