"Rod Stewart has been seen helping to repair potholes near his Essex home. The council is asking all residents not to do this and leave it to the authorities. But then we would wait forever. The Council ? They're only afraid in case someone claims, that's the only reason they're saying this ." That and the fact it will take more time and money to repair them now they have to remove the "repair" that's just been done

"Given the state of the roads around here I wish I'd bought and moon buggy or tractor as opposed to a car xx" Wouldn't they also create more holes I don't know I don't drive

"On a general point though, we should all be putting some pressure on councils to do something about potholes. The situation is quite unbearable in some areas. We all appreciate the financial constraints but it's annoying to see the money and effort wasted on inappropriate repairs that don't even last a week. Who is checking the work done? It's atrocious most of the time. " Trouble is, we voted in the people who cut local councils' budgets by £billions, so this is what the public want

"If I did that I would have to shut about 40% of Gloucestershire, and stick plants in the holes and trees in the craters.... Mind you there's so many craters I could probably replace the Amazon..." Which is ironic as its probably the amazon juggernauts creating them

"Why is the tarmac on our roads so easily broken? It has a rough / course texture, unlike the roads I've driven on in France, Spain etc. Is the UK tarmac different? I'm sure someone one here will know the answer " I think a lot of it is to do with how the surfaces are laid and repaired more than the materials used. It's farmed out to the cheapest bidder, rarely if ever checked and pothole repairs in my area last less than a year on the main road. Just spray a pretty colour round it... throw a bit of hot tarmac in and tamp it down for a few minutes... Seems to be what they do here. Highways maintenence around here is next to zero.

" Absolute what they do. Nobody really cares to check anything and pot hole repairs are also pot luck depending where you live. They recently resurfaced a side road here that had hardly any reason to and have left for years the main road in total disrepair apart from the odd hole the filled just the way you described which lasted a few weeks at most.

"I am seeing whole brand new surfaces crumbling in weeks around here.. the top layer is as thin as the ham in a British Rail sandwich" Wonder why it doesnt last ? What could it possibly be? If only some super intelligent person could find a better way to maintain our highways better

I'm sure someone one here will know the answer " Will be the weather We are wetter than Spain. As soon as water gets beneath the top layer it becomes an issue in the winter when that water freezes, expands and causes bigger cracks. Admittedly colder countries might have a better solution.
