How to stop eating....

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

You know when you're not supposed to but want to.

Or you know you've had enough to eat but out of sheer habit you find yourself at the cupboard/fridge door peering in.

What do you do to stop yourself eating more?

One person said to go brush your teeth as that can help.

Do you have any neat tricks or tips that work?

(other than getting someone to lock them for you.)

Make a brew

Set a time (more than 1 hour) when you can have it (and hope that by then you went off the idea

Do some exercise

Who am I kidding. Just eat it.

Have a glass of water. Wait 10 minutes. If you’re still hungry have a healthy snack.

It works for me

I chew gum

Drink water

Immerse myself in my hobby to forget about wanting to eat.

I write goals on the fridge and cupboard doors to remind me why I need to eat less.

I feel your pain, I'm a real grazer and it seems I can snack endlessly.

I reach for the chewing gum (as Keyser said). I know it won't fill you up, but definitely distracts me.

Drinking lots to fill you up too!

It's still eating, so obviously not always an option, but I just try to have loads of watermelon or cucumber on hand as it's filling but negligible on the calories front!

"But what if you have to have an empty stomach?

Is this for an operation?

If you’re having a General Anaesthetic eating even the smallest of things - even gum can cause you vomit while on the operating table, this could cause you to ch*ke, it won’t come out because of the breathing tube, you will then breathe it into your lungs and drown in it. Not to mention putting the theatre staff on high alert and panic stations

Do yourself a favour and don’t eat.

Water, sparking or not, is a good idea.

Stuff sweetened with artificial sweeteners, even if they’re zero calorie, will trigger an insulin response that will see you hungrier than before you drank them within 30 minutes.

Fruit juice and smoothies have more sugar in them than most “full fat” fizzy drinks. Whole fresh fruit, regardless of its benefits, is also loaded with sugar.

Best to have a bowl of unsweetened porridge. “Oat so simple” original is about 280 calories a portion, but it will keep you feeling full for ages. I throw a few raisins or sultanas in to sweeten it.

The artificial sweetener spiking insulin thing is bullshit and numerous peer reviewed studies have proved this.

It really depends on why you shouldn't really eat- by the looks of your profile, it's not a weight issue & you've said it's not surgery.... can you add any details as to why you shouldn't? Is it preventative? Wanting to eat more healthily?

Often it helps to focus on your reason...

I don’t buy treats, just the food I need until the next shop. If I get the urge to have crisps, I know, by the time I’ve gone to the shop and got back, the desire will have gone, so I don’t bother. I also stock up on a lot of fruit, the sweetness in that helps me stay away from chocolate

"But what if you have to have an empty stomach?

You can do it, millions of people spend their entire lives hungry, we don’t heed to eat so regularly and often, there’s no biological reason to . If you can’t control those urges what chance do have of taking control of more important abd tougher things ?

Try fasting for a few days to put your stomach back in its place & recalibrate your relationship with food. I’ll quite regularly go a couple of days without eating , sometimes 3-4 days and maybe once a year myself and friend fast for an entire week. Those urges disappear completely

I have to go 4 hours before I can take medication that needs to be taken on an empty stomach.

Not a body or weight issue, not surgery, I tend to eat little and often and be a grazer.

So water would be ok, food of any kind can't go in, and I certainly need more willpower. Though I didn't eat for the 4 hours anyway. Will take a bit to get used to as I'm not used to doing it.

Literally posted to see if there were any other ways other than brushing teeth that help you not think about it.

Oh and I'd have pinned the man for sex had he been in my reach, but the man has to work sometimes.
