"As a software developer most languages get a -1 value when the item becomes invalid. Think of the contents of a set. 0 is empty and 1+ when things are in it. To delete the set in a computer the language may send a message to set the amount of items in that set to -1 so the software just deletes it as invalid. It's probably a software issue that the developers didn't pick up during testing.
