I think it should stop, it's had its day. My mum used to go years ago with some of her dogs and I was the mug who had to go with her. About time it ended x

along with the designer dog breeding that create good looking defects that are harmful to the dog, snouts for example and breathing problems.

There's just too much of this now and the owners have the nerve to charge up to thousands of pounds for a dog that has health issues x

How would you prevent it? unless there was a ban on breeding pedigree dogs, then people will continue to exploit animals in the same way.

The best course of action is for breeders to operate on a more international scale. Widening the DNA pool available will help reduce the likelihood propelling genetic disorders. Even better though would be using gene mapping to identify the corrupt genes and actively breed them out of the gene pool.

To be fair PETA have no fucking clue what they actually want. A large part of PETA don't actually want animals as pets, at all.

The majority of breeders actually want to preserve the identity of the breeds along with returning them to their healthy status. They do amazing health checks and avoid genes that can be passed on that will cause health problems to pass down the generations where and when possible. Not all of them are money grabbing monsters.

A large part of the breeding issue is on backyard breeders, puppy farms or any average joe/joanne that gets a dog and decides "I want her to have puppies"

Pugs as we all know are one of the most deformed and have extreme defects due to extreme breeding, but their original appearance was much closer to that of a Puggle (pug x beagle).

A well breed pedigree (healthy and zero defects in the name of "beauty") is an amazing sight to behold. Most of the most stunning visual dogs are those of the working side of the breed.

My point is, crufts and showing of breeds is fine in and of itself. The pushing of visuals to the extreme is what needs to be challenged, and strongly.

This whole comment I made is certainly not aimed at the person I quoted directly.

After seeing the state of what is classed as a healthy German shepherd, looking like it's hips had gone, it's madness! These poor animals, inbred, defects and many other problems. Yes it should be stopped.

To be fair it's not really all that different to the thousands (potentially millions) of overweight and unhealthy "loved" pets.

99% of the time people will see a slim labrador, or a lean beagle and assume its underfed and neglected because so many others we see are simply overweight either through overfeeding, under exercise, or both.

Usually those people will often be the first to be shouting "cruelty" at the others.

"Breeding dogs to look good but not care about built in defects"

Pfft - dogs are not just bred to look good but they shouldn’t have any defects either. Many of the male dogs are stud dogs too but many are pets also. I have a friend who shows for fun but the last few years she’s qualified for Crufts too. And is there right now with her dogs.

If you want to stop this then you need to stop ALL animal showing, be it cats, horses, goats, agricultural shows, fancy chickens….. for many it’s a hobby, a day out not just for the competitors but the audience too, including myself.

I’d rather people breed dogs than people.

That's what my mother used to have, miniature smooth and standard long haired dachshunds. They're gorgeous dogs and so affectionate x

Yes it should still be a thing. What needs to change is the Kennel Club breed standards. Then people will breed accordingly and the defects will disappear.

They are breeding their legs so short nowadays that soon they will no longer reach the floor
