Only if they private message because what they have to say, or put silly comments on things I write in anticipation of DM, they are not willing to write it publicly.

Most of the time a well written response works best.

land of make believe

I blocked someone once because she was very vocal in the forums about a situation she was going through that I was also going through and it was too hard to read.

Apart from that I really enjoy the discussions and different opinions on here.

No I never block forumites. Mostly because I do the secret service and they wouldn’t be able to get involved if I did. Besides I often have different opinions to a lot of people. Doesn’t mean I’d block them or dislike them. I do use the private notes function though.

I enjoy the thought of being blocked by a profile I’d have never looked at in the first place.

It’s a little victory that somebody has wasted that brief moment of time over me that they will never get back.

No but found we had been blocked by somebody after they completely twisted what I said on the forum (trying to be a clever clogs ) then they sent an abusive message followed by a block so we couldn’t respond to them which I found all pretty childish behaviour for an adult to be honest

Yes I have done when someone is continuously antagonistic or misogynistic.

I have also done so when they have used something in my profile to have a dig or in one case where they repeated something in the forums that I had said in private to a third party and they were obviously letting me know where they stood in regard to the other person.

Life experience has taught me two things in regard to online engagement. One that if someone has a bad attitude and an extreme or horrid opinion on one subject that's all I need or want to know about them because everything else is a facade.

And two is that I won't waste my energy trying to understand them as they beat me over the head with their extreme views.

People can say alot about themselves in the way they message you privately. We had a polite message with no face picture complementing our pics. We respond to say thank you. Next response was "hmmmm would love to see more" Yeah that was a block.

To be fair we may have misunderstood the question. If it is literally one thing we wouldn't block, but if they kept saying horrid stuff or sounded like a complete fruitcake or pervert then obviously then yes.

If someone's opinion makes your blood boil, would you interact with them in a physical social setting? I doubt it. These forums are social settings, so you're entitled to block whoever you wish, as long as it's justifiable.

I think there are very few people that would block someone just for one comment though obviously it would depend how bad it was. For me normally its because iv noticed a pattern or just know they aren't someone I want any contact from.

"Do you read the forum's see something you don't agree with or like and press the block button? "

Yeah, I use it like a filter. If someone is expressing views that are entirely in incompatible with my personal values and ethics, then it helps me avoid ever wasting time thinking about “going there” with someone.

There’s also a protective element to it. While I’m careful about what I put on my profile, it makes sense to close that particular door to someone with whom I’ve disagreed.

There’s no punitive aspect to it. My profile is clearly nothing special to anyone but me, so there’s no “that’ll teach them” thought.

It’s been useful in the past when people change their pic and profile name - I’ve sometimes gone to click through to find that I’ve blocked them, having forgotten that they hold vastly different views to me about things I find important like equality, etc.

No not that often. I don't see the point in blocking someone just because they have an opinion. However I know I've been blocked by a few men for voicing my opinion. Which I think is ridiculous because one, I have no intention of messaging someone outwith my age filter and two, they can't message me anyway. People will do what they want, regardless. It stops any chance of chatting to them a month or six down the line when they turn on the charm in messages and don’t show the side they showed in their forum posts.

For example I was chatting to a guy I was planning meeting for a social. There was then a thread about the number of verifications people have.

Why are you bothered? If someone has blocked you, don’t waste the mental energy wondering why or betting annoyed about it.

It's strange. Blocking doesn't mean you can't see them in the forum, does it? The forum is a public place to look and post within the site rules. Unless you were being deliberately rude to them, it's really odd to tell you what you can or can't do here, even with them. They can choose to ignore you

I have done, though I try to avoid it.

I actually reported a thread a few weeks ago… it seemed to me that some guy from Ireland just landed himself in the lounge and decided to be as abusive to absolutely everyone as he could… to the point where he was wishing people dead!

I suspect he may have been d*unk and in a foul mood, but it was unacceptable

"Seems a bit pointless. Because you don’t block their forum posts by doing that? Or am I wrong??

It stops any chance of chatting to them a month or six down the line when they turn on the charm in messages and don’t show the side they showed in their forum posts.

For example I was chatting to a guy I was planning meeting for a social. There was then a thread about the number of verifications people have.

His attitude to women in that thread showed him as someone I do not ever want to meet.

Oh very true. In fact someone I blocked this morning from a thread I started messaged me recently. On the surface, very charming

You told me you wouldn’t say anything."

Well at least you got called charming

Haven't so far though not against it. As someone wrote about comments about violence on women, anyone who agrees with violence is a block for us. As we said, not so far.

"No everyone has the right to an opinion!"

That's true, but if they have opinions which I find distasteful why on earth would I want to meet them.

We use FAB for a swingers meeting platform so you have to fit what we are looking for.

Not looking for friends or long term partners.

So for us it's a block and if you don't read our profile it's a block too.

I sometimes receive abusive messages from forum regulars for no reason other than they don't like my posts, but I don't even block them.

I only block people from the forum in extreme circumstances, I think I've only got maybe 2 or 3 blocked. It's usually men who have an intense dislike for women.

Yes, I think we definitely misunderstood the context in our original answer.

After checking a few threads recently we would agree.

Discounting someone having a bad day, or one comment we disagree with, if they come across as a fruitcake or mean peraon then it's absolutely a block.

No. People are entitled to their opinions. I may disagree with them on one subject but agree on another.

If someone is sufficiently incompatible with me that I’d consider preemptive blocking, it would probably be pointless as I’d still see them on the forum but we’d be unlikely to contact each other anyway.

I only block those the message and are abusive, or guys that wink or message me when it’s clearly futile (had they read my profile)

Those on here that I don’t like (there are a few) still sometimes say things I agree with, it’s not like a house of command them and us battle in here

The funniest experiences I've had in regard to people messaging me off the back of a forum comment are when people on both sides of the argument get in touch to tell me I'm right.

I asked once in a thread about being supportive to other fabbers if people practiced what they preached or if it was all lip service?

The person starting the thread messaged to thank me for my valid question and said she had a lot of faith in the good people of the forums and was sure they were very supportive but didn't acknowledge me in the thread.

At the same time a couple of other contributors messaged to say they agreed because the op had a reputation for causing all sorts of background drama in chatgroups and was the main reason some people had left the groups and also left fab.

I had no knowledge of this beforehand and it was a general question but I thought it funny how some people won't speak out on the forums and in fact are forum besties with people they are backstabbing privately.

I’m never sure what’s worse - messaging directly to tell me I’m wrong in an opinion or messaging to use something as a come on in a creepy way.

Like the guys that messaged after a post I made about a social that went badly wrong (guy turned out to be a creepy, grabby horrible person) in a “sorry that guy assaulted you, come out with me and I promise I won’t” way

It’s so annoying.

Like, it can be fun to keep chatting to someone after a thread closes or dies so I’m not saying it’s never ok to message privately.

But I do hate the creepy ones. Especially when it’s people that don’t post on the forums at all - that just comes across as trawling just to find people to creep on.

It was similar when I asked about one of the clubs - 6 offers to “chaperone” from complete strangers

Dunfermline

A few folk seem to be getting really caught up on the “blocking someone for their opinions” and the “right thing fee speech”.

The only interaction me blocking someone prevents is with me. I’d like to think most people will be able to get over that loss. They can still post whatever they like on the forum (subject to mods, etc.,) and they can message anyone else.

There are 29k + people currently logged on to this site and countless thousands more offline. Anything I can do to filter out the people I don’t want to talk to is a positive in my book. Saves everyone the hassle.

And it doesn’t prevent anyone from interacting in the forums - as I have done on other threads with people who are blocked (possibly mutually).

"Do you read the forum's see something you don't agree with or like and press the block button?

I have done in the past

Local updates is the best for this

I hoped I wouldn’t be able to see their future posts but no luck "

I don't think if you blocked someone you can see their posts on local updates. Or at least I did think you could.

Back of the bins.

Occasionally but it’s very rare. Stops them contacting us if we’re not compatible from their opinions.

I get blocked but to be honest those that block me I probably don't want to know

"I have blocked some people. Not because of their opinion, everyone is allowed to have one, but because they have given me snash or written something abusive either generally in the forums or to others specifically.

I hate it when people give me snash!!

I prefer to keep all the snash for myself. I’m a bit greedy when it comes to snash.

Shame on you! Snash ought to be shared out...

Damn Davie missed this ribbing

Sharing snash you say.

I should probably be trying to cut down on the snash…

So should Davie "

Nooooooooo.

Everyones getting blocked here because I don't like your opinions.

Seriously though I forget about most interactions with people so unless they dm me some horrible shit. I wouldn't take time out to block them specifically.

"No because some people might have a very strong, or even horrid, view about aspecific thing, but normal views about everything else. You shouldn't really judge people based on one thing they say. What is this Twitter?

Why shouldn't I judge someone on one horrendous view that they've spouted here? Why shouldn't I make sure they someone with that horrid view can't message me?

!!

I can't tell what your response means?

It’s agreement. As in ‘This!!’

Ah thank you. Not that everyone needs to agree with me. "

It was a great point so thank *you*

I have done. But I often unblock if I think it was just me in a mood and I took it the wrong way.

I’m firm but fair!

If I can’t see it then I can’t understand the world or counter any knobiness if I choose to. I think some folks can’t trust themselves to mentally ignore idiocy and maybe blocking helps them feel better about their own values mebe? Idk?

Yes. If I find that someone holds views that are severely in opposition to my philosophy of life I block them so that (a) they can't look at my profile - I have face pictures and personal information on there, and (b) I never accidentally go reading their profile.
