Certain words can't be used in messages. We've been blocked twice because if it. I don't think either block lasted more than about half an hour.

Not true.

The autofilter will have picked it up.

Everything can be seen I would imagine. Certain words flag up though and it automatically kicks in the block.

It will be automated, yeah. A filter that flags the word and issues a block.

A friend of mine ran a forum years ago and we were always using the word cunt. So he changed the automation filter to change every use of the word cunt to show up as cupcake. Even the variations like cunted would show up as cupcaked.

We had fun trying to get around it.

Not everything can be seen. Not unless they have added a hack to the forum or access the dB and try to find someone's specific details/messages.

I had a conversation with someone once and both our messages were deleted by admin so they are watching our messages x

This is incorrect so don't worry. It will just be an automated thing that picks up on certain words and flags them. There is a word for it but I can't recall it.

Specific admin/moderators will have access to view messages. There needs to be a backdoor to do so for very specific reasons - accusations etc. However the use of this ability is generally very limited and clearly breaches privacy rules if done outside of certain situations.

As to why they would even want to read the messages of some random 2 people out of thousands, that is the true mystery.

Always thought it was strange. There was nothing really nasty about it, he was just being a pain in the ass so I said what I said and boom, messages gone!

Why would they need to hack their own code base?

As they have created the site, they can do what they like with it.

It's all just data stored in the DB and as long as they have rights to view the database, they would be able to see anything pretty easily.

Oh I know that, I was an admin on 20k+ forum in the days before Facebook killed everything.

For the forum software we had there was only a third party back door and we specifically didn't install it as it then comes down to privacy and legality.

Like I said, it isn't happening and if it is then there should be something in the T&C's clearly stating that despite being called private messages they aren't.

If they are reading them and have not told us via the t&C's that they are reading them, then I very much doubt they will admit to it now
