All dogs are descended from wolves right?

So how did we end up with breeds like the sausage dog?

What did they cross it with??

It wasn't cross breeding. It was selective breeding. You breed for specific traits and after many generations they become more exaggerated. They have become too exaggerated these days though and it is creating issues for some breeds.

Just selective breeding for extreme physical characteristics. In Defence of Dogs by John Bradshaw is really good if you're really interested.

But of both. Initially it was selective breeding, then it was selective cross breeding of specific lines once very different - every modern breed origin is essentially a cross until you go back far enough.

Beagle origins for example are from the breeding of the now "extinct" Talbot hound and greyhound. The beagle would then be used to eventually be bred with another larger scent hound breed to produce foxhounds and harriers.

This essentially but to add on a little tidbit,These dogs no longer had to survive out in the wild so control of their evolution was handed to humans basically and what we wanted we wanted smaller so got they got smaller.These dogs would never have even been viable to exist out in the wild.

Thats also the reason why there are so many health issues with dog breeds now,Cause we were only focused on size and the we neglected other things that may be required for a healthy life also they’re heavily inbred to ensure these traits so any disadvantages are also multiplied.

Wolves have been crossbred with domestic dogs. The breed Utonagan is a cross between a GSD, a Husky, Alaskan Malamute, & Grey Wolf. They were bred to look like a wolf with the character of a dog. They come under the Canis Lupus rather than the Canis Familiaris
