Who can remember the scariest moments in non-horror movies?

The Indiana Jones movies has a fair share of scary moments but the scariest has to be the opening of the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Ark's holy power (which is foreshadowed earlier in the movie when Indy mentions lightning and fire) is both incredible and horrifying when it destroys the Nazis. It gets more horrific when we see what it does to Dietrich, Toht and Belloq by having their heads implode, melt and explode.

If this doesn't put the fear of God in you, nothing will.

It's amazing that Spielberg filmed that scene in post production to get a bigger scare out of the audience which actually worked.

As a child, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal... Saying that, lots of shit aimed at kids in the 80s was sort of the stuff of nightmares.

Again more to do with being a child at the time, the Raptor scenes in Jurassic Park. Especially the first appearance as they get the power back on.

I can still remember staying in the cinema lobby for the rest of the movie after seeing the T-rex ate that guy on the toilet when I was a kid.

The original Clash of the Titans movie certainly had a scary moment with Medusa. That scene had atmosphere and a lot of tension. Medusa herself was terrifying and definitely one of Ray Harryhausen's best creations.

The original yes, the remake an absolute joke. Completely ruined the ending for an American audience.

However totally agree original was a modern day 12 certificate, so Children could’ve seen it.

Threads has already been mentioned but in a similar vein there's The War Game (1966) which is equally scary. In particular the firestorm scene which is a very strong contender for scariest scene ever filmed, horror or non-horror.

On the same theme there's also When The Wind Blows, just gets more depressing as time goes on. The nuclear attack scene in Terminator 2 is pretty scary too.

There's a couple of scenes in Irreversible that are pretty scary and extremely distressing. Not going to describe them here but unless you have a strong stomach they're best avoided.

Any scene involving Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men.

Pretty much the whole of Requiem for a Dream.

Oh, and one that scared me as a kid....The ghost in the library at the start of Ghostbusters.

The nuclear nightmare scene from Terminator 2 is indeed horrifying and is praised by scientist for being the most accurate nuclear explosion depicted in movies.

Another scary moment has to be from Ghostbusters 2 when Ray, Egon and Winston are in an abandoned subway tunnel and they make an echo by yelling hello bit when Winston does it, there's nothing but a creepy silence which then is broken by an demonic voice calling Winston's name. A moment later, they end up being surrounded by decapitated heads on spikes.

Wow. For a Ghostbusters movie, that scene is like something straight out of a horror movie.

It was in the novelisation of the film. Describing a feel of a serpent, moving in his belly, hungry for willies blood. Hes concious of his fear of snakes but cant fight it. I wish they showed it in the film!
