Energy saving tips

couple, us we him her.

Perhaps we can share nuggets of wisdom on how to save money on heating and electricity without forking out on other things preparing for the up and coming billageddon.

Bathe with your partner or have an alarm set to say 5 mins for shower's.

Change lightbulbs to low energy efficient one's.

We have two spare quilts that we keep behind the sofa and wrap up in when watching the tellybox.

Personally I think it’s disgusting that we are all coming up with tips and trucks to survive in this world that was created by years of Tory scum hollowing out this country for every penny it has

Do you think those at the top are pinching pennies?

Do you sometimes wonder if this stiff upper lip attitude the brits have has somehow landed us in the situation we’re in now?

Do you think saving harder and harder, and learning how to be happy with less and less is going to lead to a world you want to see your kids grow up in?

“Take your bread, turn off your tv, lower your heating, shut up and be happy” - some millionaire banker on his private jet

Absolutely agreed. But in the meantime... I turned off my heating two months ago and am just cold.

“I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth. Banks are going bust. Shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be.

We know things are bad – worse than bad. They’re crazy. It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is: ‘Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.’

Well, I’m not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get MAD! I don’t want you to protest. I don’t want you to riot – I don’t want you to write to your congressman, because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad. (shouting) You’ve got to say: ‘I’m a human being, god-dammit! My life has value!’

While a vent is often great, when put in context of energy price rises globally, and certainly in Europe, I don’t think we can point the to get at a Tory government wholesale for this given every country is getting it bad and some worse to come (eg Europe relies on 30% Russian gas, we are 3%). Sure they’re shit, but they don’t control the worldwide energy trading markets

Yup it's disgusting but unless you can come up with a better idea how to heat my house for free?

I do agree that the energy companies should be made to take a hit in profit and the government should definitely step in to put a cap on bills NOW.

Not next year or year after.

It's greed that's pushing up price's same as petrol price.

Demand is no different it's greed pure and simple.

I think that profits should be limited to a certain percent and no more.

I've shut off most of my flat, turned the heating off, wash everything on cold and eco, wash the bed sheets less often, and only cook (batch cook only) with the slow cooker and microwave. If it helps.

The OP asked for some specific practical bits of advise but yet again that is ignored and turning the thread into a party political debate. Whilst a good debate about these things is always great, does not have to constantly highjack every thread someone is looking for a bit of practical advise to deal with their day to day problems as it feels they are ignored. Just my opinion of course and I am certainly not someone who thinks I am always right.

We use a little fan heater to warm whatever room we’re in.

I walk to the shops much more than I used to.

Cold wash all out laundry, and air it outdoors whenever weather allows.

I try to drive more economically, and a quieter times in the day to encounter less congestion.

I batch cook using slow cookers. And heat with microwave. Rarely cook on a gas hob now.

Heating has been replaced with clothing layers.

Shower temp’ turned right down.

Total savings may not amount to much, but it might mean we all get to eat instead of me having to skip eating so I can ensure the women of my house do.

There is already a price cap in place, that limits what energy suppliers can charge customers. They are all selling energy at a loss because of it - that's why so many of them have gone out of business in the last few months

The government should be helping the voters/.....

Energy firms raking high profits in - I bet they are not cutting their energy use to the absolute minimum. Wearing fleece indoors and going to bed to keep warm. Petrol and diesel prices through the roof and the government allowing the price caps to be set beyond reasonable.

Stop Foreign Aid to other countries when we need the help too.

Cut Royal family budget

Make everyone pay Council Tax since we all use the services

Stop taxing on pensions when people retire

"What's batch cooking?"

I always cook enough for 2-3 days , chilli,,curry etc and a huge pan of rice or pasta. It rarely makes it to fridge or the freezer as there’s always people here eating so just stays on the cooker , but when I do get the place to myself I freeze portions. It’s so cheap , I spend around £100 - £150 a month of food for 2-4 people. I’ve noticed oils and fruit rising in price but the amount of disposable income spent on food is so small that inflation isn’t really felt

In the west.

I batch cook and never go to a supermarket for a 'big shop'. I just buy enough for a couple of days, that way fresh foods don't go off.

I take cold or frozen stuff out the fridge or freezer and let it come up to room temperature, that way it doesn't take as long to cook.

^^^But orgies sound like a winner to me.

Demand is different. Last year was a harsh winter combined with more people at home during the day. That meant more usage. That meant prices went up

As more was used last winter there is less reserves so prices have gone up.

The UK no longer has masses of gas storage facilities, we can't buy cheap and sell at a later date.

"

"

Of course they are, seeing investments drop by 6% in the last few weeks and inflation running at over 5 % has a huge impact on decisions . I have more than enough disposable income but am very careful, can live comfortable on around 10% of my income but this week have cancelled PT sessions at £140 a month and massively reducing things like Uber, eating out and buying clothes. It makes sense to limit spending.

"Do you think saving harder and harder, and learning how to be happy with less and less is going to lead to a world you want to see your kids grow up in?

"

Yes in part. People who need less and give more are generally much happier and successful. I’ve always encouraged my kids to live on around 70-80% max , save for emergencies, enjoy the things that are free and give a good chunk of income away

Not many realize that leaving appliances on standby use more electricity than actually using them which also adds to further damage even worse could lead to fire. So unplug besides the obvious fridge at night is your saving hours but if you're not in the house same applies

In reply to the actual thread. If lockdown taught us anything it’s how much of a consumer society we live in.

We actually saved &1k through not being able to go out. What we did realise is what is actually important in life such as good health, friends and family. We only aim to be comfortable in life as we don’t want to get caught up in the trappings of wealth.

As for practical tips this winter so far we have dressed for the season instead of walking around the house in just a t shirt. This has enabled us to turn the thermostat down a couple of notches.

Anything that heats water uses the most energy which prompted us to sell the dishwasher and wash up once daily by hand which doesn’t take any longer to do. Using a dishwasher consumes 2 hours energy at a time.

Taking a shower every other day if you can or reducing the time also saves. These are a few tips which already add up and go some way to save on the pennies.

There are many ways to save when you think about it. We like the outdoors so when we’re hiking we take food and drink with us rather than pay extortionate costs at a cafe for just a sandwich. A loaf of bread costs less.

Doing what we’ve mentioned will save us at &150 per year. Taking that into account we can still afford it’s just a case of adapting and cutting your cloth according to your garment.

Folk go on about millionaires but it’s not all what it’s cracked up to be. You’ve only got to watch new lives in the wild to see how people actually turn away from all the pressures of a high profile career.

These are all good tips. The batch cooking is great and I always do that. Also if making a casserole for example, you can make sure you have extra sauce that you can make another meal with like using it with pasta or use with jacket potatoes etc.

I think this "throw away" society mentality that many under 35s have gotten used to in recent years really hasn't helped.

People have just got used to throw away rather than repair, replace what's in perfect condition.

I'm not saying that it's the reason for high energy bills but it must add with transportation costs of goods and so on.

Obviously if you can buy something newer that's more energy efficient and can save you money then go for it.

Make do and mend as they say. We know it’s tough for everyone but in comparison it’s not like we’re living in the 1930’s when people we’re truly poor. The younger generation overlook how tough it was for generations gone by.

Anything that stops draughts will help. Use old towels whatever by doors to keep heat heat in. Old fashioned yes, but door curtains stop draughts if your door isn't brilliant.

Make sure you close curtains as it starts to get dark, to retain any heat accumulated.

Bleed any radiators you have, to improve efficiency.

Being in the top 2% of earners in the UK it’s actually turned out ok

I’m just wondering how many years of stagnant wages and rising living costs people will put up with

By all means, if your happy turning your heating off and buying cheaper foods while people at the top do nothing to help, then sure, crack on

"Not many realize that leaving appliances on standby use more electricity than actually using them which also adds to further damage even worse could lead to fire. So unplug besides the obvious fridge at night is your saving hours but if you're not in the house same applies"

As an electrician, no it doesn’t

It was always about £1 per month per device based on 1/2-3watt standby consumption but with unit rates around 30p imagine it’s higher now.

Leaving things on standby uses more energy than switching them off. They simply can't use more power in standby, it's illogical. You have the right idea but the wrong reasoning

Just get yourself a tester with an amp clamp on it. Test the amps running through a device when it’s on vs when it’s off

I don't have gas in my flat.

My electric is on a key meter and £10 lasts 2 weeks.

I don't use an oven. Microwave small meals. Don't turn on any lights. Scented candles. The only electric I use is for router ,microwave ,electric shower for 2 mins, and charging my phone. That's it.

Doesn’t appeal to us. There is more to life than that. We do choose to be where we are as what we are happy and comfortable in life. We don’t even do the lottery. If you wish to work that hard fair play! If that’s what works for you.

There has always been pressure from society to earn big work hard ! No thank you!

The finer things in life is more appealing to us like looking after your health and family doing the things that we want to do.

I often wonder why so many millionaires and business owners are stressed and look fed up. You wouldn’t think they would with all that money surely. We do know a few.

Well I’ve done it for you and can confirm, electronic devices don’t use more power when they are off. That’s what “off” means

However it is true you can save money by turning stuff off at the plug instead of leaving on standby

I’d imagine it’s almost unaccountable though but I guess every bit helps

"The OP asked for some specific practical bits of advise but yet again that is ignored and turning the thread into a party political debate. Whilst a good debate about these things is always great, does not have to constantly highjack every thread someone is looking for a bit of practical advise to deal with their day to day problems as it feels they are ignored. Just my opinion of course and I am certainly not someone who thinks I am always right."

Absolutely, it’s not hard for a solo sparky to break 60-70k a year. That’s still top 4% earnings

A small business can easily break 100.

Guess there’s not 1 size fits all answer depending how you push the numbers, but it always shocks me how high up the ladder a simple tradesman can be

30k average income in the UK. Wages aren’t going up, inflation is going up, living cost is going up, house prices are through the roof. Services like the NHS and our roads area crumbling

And people are more concerned with only boiling half a kettle or putting towels under their door than asking why.

It would be like buying a device that turns your sockets off when you go out.

It lowers energy usage, but you could have done that without the device

In your opinion, you don’t know anything about my house and how inaccessible some of the rads are. It’s a pain to get to them! A small investment is reaping rewards via lower consumption whether that’s via technology or via your hands.

You're assuming that anyone interested in energy tips isn't so concerned with what's happening in the UK. And the world. But when people are just trying to keep their homes warm and their kids fed - that's not what is critical for them. It's just staying afloat.

On a mooch

Batch cooking and working out recipes helps prior to shopping.

Example I mostly buy the meat / fish we eat from the 3 for £10, most individual items will create 2/3 meals.

Example I get a pork joint that will create 3 different meals; pulled pork (creates enough for two meals, so one in the freezer for another week), spit roast pork and four chops which we then marinade before freezing.

Mince 650g. Half it one for chilli base and one for Italian base, each then creates two meals with one base of each going in the freezer

Chicken thighs (8) again gets halved or thirded, get for roasting, stir frys, fajitas.

So for £10 I’ve created 11/12 base meals that I only need to add veg, rice, pasta or wraps too.

The following week I’ll select three completely different items, fresh fish, lamb joint, beef stewing steak and create similar.

My weekly shop is £40 (food for two) with the bulk spent on fresh veg and veg or topping up spices, base pasta / rice

"Not many realize that leaving appliances on standby use more electricity than actually using them which also adds to further damage even worse could lead to fire. So unplug besides the obvious fridge at night is your saving hours but if you're not in the house same applies

As an electrician, no it doesn’t

Would you care to demonstrate I'm not a electrician but was advised by Martin Lewis money saving expert

Just get yourself a tester with an amp clamp on it. Test the amps running through a device when it’s on vs when it’s off

But we're discussing how to save money and buying one of those I wouldn't be it's easier listening to Martin Lewis as he is a expert and neither of us are

Well I’ve done it for you and can confirm, electronic devices don’t use more power when they are off. That’s what “off” means

However it is true you can save money by turning stuff off at the plug instead of leaving on standby

I’d imagine it’s almost unaccountable though but I guess every bit helps "

Pal I never said off but left on standby as their is still a electric current passing through a appliance which isn't in use by a human

Use a decent microwave oven with convection fan function. Also a microwave steamer for veg, rice etc. Saves time and money.

The whole "turn it off" thing is made to seem much bigger than it is. Yes, something on standby uses power, it would be idiotic to assume otherwise.

It would also be idiotic to think that turning it off uses more power in standby than when it's in active mode. In what universe does that even make sense except maybe for a very few small number of niche items, and even then questionable.

Will turning off instead of standby save you money? Yes it would, you very likely won't notice how much overall though. You would also save more money by not using it at all or not using the device in active mode ever but keeping it in standby. That would be very noticeable.

Standby vs off you will be saving in the areas of 60p per device (different for every device, some more some less) by switching off a year. So ~60p x number of devices.

"We use a little fan heater to warm whatever room we’re in.

Use an oil filled radiator instead of the fan heater. It's more economical because it retains warmth, continuing to heat the room after you have turned it off.

Yes and no depending on what you are cooking. Example I could put a joint in a slow cooker for 6/8!hours and I’d save a lot more energy than putting it in my fan oven for 4 hours.

Apparently an average slow cooker uses 135-160w, where as a standard oven is 2500w. So simply put, apparently ‘ You'd need to use your 160W slow cooker for around 15 hours and 42

minutes to match just one hour with

your electric oven’

Even an air fryer oven that I have may use the same energy as an oven but, I don’t need to warm it up, it’s smaller than an oven, it cooks food quicker, so saving energy costs that way. I tend to steam / cook veg in a microwave as again quicker and more cost effective than on the hob.

"Perhaps we can share nuggets of wisdom on how to save money on heating and electricity without forking out on other things preparing for the up and coming billageddon.

Bathe with your partner or have an alarm set to say 5 mins for shower's.

Change lightbulbs to low energy efficient one's.

We have two spare quilts that we keep behind the sofa and wrap up in when watching the tellybox.

I'm never going to complain about my hot flushes again because they mean that I don't need to put the heating on. My kids always did call me 'the radiator'

Maybe people could 'adopt' a woman of a certain age for all their heating needs? "

"I brought a Hive smart energy system including smart TRV’s, now I only heat the rooms that I need to and control it via an app. My energy consumption has dropped but obviously the energy price increases have hit me like everyone else.

No offence, but you've spent money on kit to do something that you can easily do manually for no cost. You've spent more money than you will save and unfortunately that will be the same for a lot of people.

With respect you’re wrong. I can now control all rads including inaccessible ones via an app. My energy consumption has reduced by around 20% so over a couple of years the system will have paid for itself.

Well no, I'm not. You've paid money to make things easier. Congrats that it's worked for you but you could have manually turned them down.

In your opinion, you don’t know anything about my house and how inaccessible some of the rads are. It’s a pain to get to them! A small investment is reaping rewards via lower consumption whether that’s via technology or via your hands."

When does turning radiators off become efficient? If I have 10 rads, is turning 1 rad off going to make any difference? The boiler still needs to heat to the same level for 1 radiator or 10? I guess it could take a shorter amount of time to heat 1 but would it be better to heat all radiators and have the heating on less time, so it is warm all over the house?

I've confused myself...

Why warm a room you are not in or using?

1 rad off out of 10 is 10% less. It won't be as simple as that, rad size and efficiency and temp will all play a part but it's a good enough ball park.

That is what I'm thinking, it isn't as simple as turning off 1 radiator out of 10 and saving 10% on energy bills.

As you said, radiator efficiency, size etc will all play a part. If you open a door to a room that isn't being heated, how does that impact the heat of the house and how long the boiler needs to stay on.

I think the idea of turning a thing off like a radiator is automatically going to save you x, may not really be the case all the time.

"“I don’t have to tell you things are bad.

It depends which one you get but you can cook chicken, steaks, etc.

I’ve one with shelves and a rotisserie spit, so literally anything I used to put in the oven I can put in the air fryer. I’ve even boiled an egg in it, without needing water.

Anything you can cook in an oven

It’s just a case of will it fit.

If it fits, I use my air fryer

If it doesn’t, I use the oven

So I cook frozen stuff, chips, chicken, burgers, I reheat pizza, loads of stuff

Just think of it as a mini oven thaf preheats in like 2 minutes

"“I don’t have to tell you things are bad.

You've been watching too many American films bud! "

Well it’s a quote from an American film so

"Would have thought microwaves would always be the cheapest cooking method, though who knows.

They’re about 50% efficient

Although that’s not always a straight forward answer because portion size matters.

Air fryers are pretty great. They’re just very small fan ovens

So if you had teenagers who are always cooking some chips etc in the oven - would this be a good alternative? I've never looked at air fryers but my kids are constantly turning the oven on.

Absolutely!! Huge difference

Love my air fryer

Same, I haven’t used my oven since I got mine

Going to sound simple now, but what kind of things except chips can you cook in it?

Anything you can cook in an oven

It’s just a case of will it fit.

If it fits, I use my air fryer

If it doesn’t, I use the oven

So I cook frozen stuff, chips, chicken, burgers, I reheat pizza, loads of stuff

Just think of it as a mini oven thaf preheats in like 2 minutes "

And they use a lot less energy than a standard fan oven? I only just decluttered and got rid of the bread maker and the slow cooker as I never used them.

It’s not that they use less, it’s that by being so small and fast you use less energy

To cook in the oven you have to heat the entire oven. That’s why they normally saying 5-10 mins pre heating

Air fryers are 1/10 the size. So it’s much less preheating

Even though an oven and a good air fryer will run around 2-3kW - the air fryer is more efficient

A better example

Cooking chips in the oven is like boiling the whole kettle for a cup of tea. It’s a lot of wasted energy

The air fryer is like boiling only what you need, 1 mugs worth

It depends which one you get but you can cook chicken, steaks, etc.

I’ve one with shelves and a rotisserie spit, so literally anything I used to put in the oven I can put in the air fryer. I’ve even boiled an egg in it, without needing water. "

Ok that's interesting, going to look into it now.

Alicante, Spain. (Sometimes in Wales)

Cycle, don't drive.

Ditch the gym membership and work out at home.

Read a book rather than use an electronic medium.

Play chess/backgammon/cards/ etc.

Definitely drop the Sky subscription!

Share books rather than buy them.

Ditch the takeaways and cook at home.

Cook as much as you need, not more. (Unless batch cooking, which is a good idea too).

Cook fresh meals rather than ready mades.

Take a packed lunch rather than eat in the works canteen.

Go to the pub less, invite friends around to drink at home.

Make your own beer/wine.

Don't upgrade to the latest phone, keep your old one on a cheap contract.

Use more blankets, turn the thermostat down a notch.

Use a hot water bottle on the settee and in bed.

Buy quality second hand clothes.

Only boil enough water for what you need.

Don't buy coffee out, make your own. (See above for 'filling the kettle just enough' tip).

Ensure you claim all the tax benefits you are entitled to.

Get elected as a Tory MP and receive thousands in donations from the Russians. (You might also get a few lucrative contracts in an industry in which you have no experience. You don't even need to own the fucking ferry!).

There are lots you can do to reduce your bills.

Fix clothing rather than buying new stuff. Don't follow trends/fashions and just wear what you have. Fix the little holes, sew buttons back on, sew hems back up etc.

See above re batch cooking.

Deliberately cooking more and freezing it is good, but cooking too much so that odd bits are left over is less sensible.

Either join a political party and work your way up the pecking order, or get famous and stand as an independent.

You'll need to say a lot more than you have in your profile though! (Although your profile pics would do an excellent job as your publicity pics!).

Seriously though, I hope you're doing okay?

I just got a 250 refund from my energy supplier because I was massively in credit after they kept putting my DD up.

I have a new boiler with a thermostat, so I think that's helping keeping the cost of heating down.

Also a smart meter, I've started going to bed when it gets pasta certain amount.

Check and see if you qualify for the warm home scheme, that's 140 quid towards your energy bill.

I scan all my receipts to apps to earn money/Amazon vouchers.

I buy cat food in bulk, usually from zooplus as it works out cheaper.

Check how much money you waste in unnecessary subscriptions & kill as many as possible. Compared to 20 years ago do we really need Spotify, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney Plus, Peloton & can you cut down your Sky package to more basic. We never used to pay out on ANY of the above & each one has sneaked up monthly outgoings because we think we must have them for our fake lifestyles

Apart from Sky on a basic package neither do I, but I suspect many people consider these essential & they will have crept up by stealth. Dumping all or just one is a saving that can be put towards other bills. As a single dad looking after 2 kids 75% of the time I have to be very keen on keeping my bills low & trimmed outgoings heavily after my divorce to keep my house & drag the bank balance up. It's now worrying after 3 years how long my efforts will last before the savings I made are back up to previous levels cos of that bastard Putin.

Depends on the house lay out but trust me, it’s not as expensive as you think to install one

The problem is the extras if you want to sell. Got to have a carbon monoxide monitor in the room to comply with electrical regs and there might be other regs I’m unaware of for burners

I bought a place that has this plus a wood burning aga that also does the central heating and hot water. Obviously it came with the cottage so I don’t know the purchase and installation costs, but £80 worth of wood and £50 of coal will see me through the winter. Get used to getting up to add wood to the fire all evening though, you use up your own energy doing that

Totally.

And as much as wood is cheap, you need somewhere to store a trailers worth of wood too or the cost effectiveness is less.

Depends if people are in a position to fund it. For many savings have been depleted during two years of covid. It's not an option for me, I don't have the space to store the wood.
