"Guys why ?. "

They may be deaf?

Side note: my phone changed deaf to dead….dead people probably wouldn’t need subtitles either

Second side note: phone changed need to breed…..if they’re dead then they probably no point trying to breed

Final point: phone changed point to oooooohhh……..think my phone is trying to tell me to arrange a meet

I know it’s a wild and wacky notion, but y’know, maybe some are heard of hearing or deaf.

Crazy I know but maybe, just maybe, that’s the reason they’re there.

We own three small noisy children. Without subtitles I find it very hard to follow what's being said. Plus I leave it on for the kids programs as I figure it can't hurt to get them to read a bit more

Also when ours is in bed we can’t have the TV up too loud.

This is actually a great way to encourage reading.

To help with spelling is the reason I watch with them on.

I do especially with films. Sometimes it’s like the actors voices are turned down and all the background noises are up / or the American accents

I've done it for so long that I struggle to follow things without them now. I'm a bad sleeper so sometimes watch things through the night and keep the volume down really low but even during the day loud TVs just make me agitated. I even listen to music via the TV so I can read the lyrics.

I watch foreign language YouTube with subtitles (in that language). Gives me a hope in hell of working out wtf is going on

Because I want to eat crisps while understanding what they're saying

So I don't have to keep rewinding when the actors mumble some bullshit important to the plot

The arsehole films with quiet dialogue in one scene then loud fucking music in the next making me play volume ping pong

Hefty Hideaway

Because I get less than half of what’s happening without them. After years of passively half watching documentaries, I can now actively engage with whatever is on.

It’s a deaf thing for me.

I watch a lot of foreign tv shows and films and find dubbing is rubbish. I like to hear the actors tone and you can pick up some of the words and remember them. When I was having anxiety attacks and depression watching this stuff helped me because I focused on the action as well as the sub titles and it stopped my mind wandering and dwelling on some very dark thoughts.

I also sometimes rewind and put them on for some of the Scottish tv shows I watch, if I can’t work out what someone has said

This was the issue I had with Squid Game. Had the first 10 mins dubbed, hated it, rewoud it and just watched it with subtitles

I sometimes can’t make out what they are saying even though my TV is up to maximum volume.. subtitles are the next level. Also watched a French DVD the other day.. I don’t speak French - it wasn’t a porn one.

Two of my sisters are deaf, they both watch the tv with headphones one, and one uses the subtitles

Tinnitus can be so bad sometimes it can cause following the dialogue a challenge.

My ex grew up in a house with subtitles because her dad was deaf, she got used to it and asked could we put them on, I had no objections and quickly realised it helps follow the story because so many times people whisper or mumble and you miss bits

Do you have Tinnitus? You have my sympathy as I have it too, but it gets worse if I’m ill

I watched Squid Games both dubbed and with subtitles just to see if that crazy woman was as annoying in Korean.

She is.

Because some TV these days is notoriously hard to hear. Because it’s in Korean or Spanish and dubbing will never ever be acceptable quality. Because the cat is asleep on your lap.

Burnleyish (She/They)

I have ADHD. It's a way of keeping my brain focused on what I'm wanting to watch instead of:

making lists in my head

Faffing on my phone

Planning out my next project

Picking at imaginary fluff on the sofa

Etc etc...

Turns out the 'very intelligent but easily distracted' on my school reports had an actual reason behind it

My hearing isn't great and any background noise in the house means I just can't hear a word.

I love sub titles

Yeah I saw a clip of dubbed Squidgames on Gogglebox and it looked awful. So much better with subtitles. You just sort of get used to reading them after a while.

I do it when I'm on the treadmill - I like to listen to loud music, but also follow what's on the tv - subtitles is perfect for that!

"Cant understand people's accent's a lot of the time and its sometimes too much noise in the house."

The annoying part of subtitles is when they give the question and the answer at the same time when you are watching a quiz.

Clearly not because a whole thread of people have just given you reasons why they do it.
