I know that the Eurovision is not for a few months yet but I thought I'd discuss why the UK will never again win this song contest.

I've heard many reason why but I think I know why. The reason why the UK will never win again is because the BBC will not allow it.

The BBC won't let the UK win as it means having to fork out loads of money to host the next event so to make sure we don't win, they pick a random unknown singer and have them sing a song completely half-assed.

As a side question if the UK had to go through the semi finals battles would they get through to the final?

Ireland have won it more than anyone but we rarely make the finals now, which maybe not a bad thing

I think it's fun. I don't care who wins. Watching the ridiculous acts and hearing Graham Norton's comments is a highlight of my year. Just because the UK doesn't win very often doesn't make it a waste of money. This country doesn't win football tournaments or other sporting competitions very often - are we meant to pull out of those too?

The difference between sports events and eurovision is that we do well in sports and make the effort whereas in eurovision, we do not.

The thing costs a huge fortune to run… the contest nearly bankrupted RTE when Ireland won 3 times in a row… that is why they send shit songs now as well!!!

You can split the countries who compete into 4

1) those who desperately want to win and see it as a tourism advert for their country (mainly Eastern European)

2) those that have taken it seriously (Sweden, Denmark ect)

3) those who haven’t hosted in a while .. but feel the need to take it seriously for a few years for their rep just so they can host every so often (The big 5, most of Western and Southern Europe and Israel)

4) those that are past caring.. or those that have just hosted and can’t afford to host again!

I love it. I get together with a few of my family and some of my mates and we always have an absolute blast. Subtitles on so we can understand the true bizarreness of some of the songs, class!

A few years ago we all went to a bar in Liverpool where Sonia was performing, watched it on a huge screen there and got absolutely slaughtered playing daft drinking games. It was great, but I think I prefer a house party where different people join the group video chat to join in on the fun.

Yes, we're going to come last. Yes, the whole thing is ridiculous. In 2012 it cost us £310k to participate. Gary Lineker is paid £1.3m by the BBC, Zoe Ball is paid £1.1m. Vanessa Feltz is paid just under £400k.

By contrast I think Eurovision is a bargain!

If we ever won it would cost somewhere in the region of €15m-€20m to host (the EBU only contributes around €6m, the host country picks up the rest of the costs). I'm not convinced it's such a bad thing to come last.

There may be some within the BBC who understand a win for the UK would revive interest in Eurovision and attract the attention of the wealthy streaming giants like Prime, who would likely steal it away at the first opportunity, but equally I believe there are a lot of honest, hard working folks at the BBC, who understand a win for the UK would / could be a moment of national pride when we could most do with some, and who want nothing more than to get massive ratings and gain recognition by the public, their bosses and their peers for the project they've been working on all year.

These claims that it’s a popularity contest and the same countries always get the points is nonsense! Italy won last year with a brilliant song and throughly deserved it. Switzerland and France ran it a close 2nd and they were really good songs too. Two years before that the Netherlands fully deserved it but historically these nations don’t fare particularly well.

Granted, Greece and Cyprus always vote for each other but political voting as a whole has diminished vastly and now it’s far more weighted towards the actual song and performance!

As far as the UK goes, name the last good song we entered? Tells you everything you need to know about why we haven’t come close and will continue to languish in last place until we actually make the effort

Bring back the days of mary hopkins.. Those were the days my friend I thought they would never end.. How times change and in this sense not for the better I was lucky enough to see her win that and in that time I've personally not heard a song as good since then in the eurovision Its a shame but true.

There is something seriously amiss with the whole process while granted the songs the uk submit are not winning material they certainly aren’t bad enough to have zero points after an hours voting repeatedly over years but some countries enter the biggest load of tosh almost for comedy value and score in the top five.

I think you either love or loath eurovision. I find it highly entertaining for one night only. Admittedly low brow but so what. I even enjoy the hilarious voting. Tbf, there are a few decent entries this year. I usually like the ones that fit more around the eurovision style. My favourites at the moment are Albania,Cyprus, Finland,Spain, France, Greece, Israel and UK. Not necessarily in that order and my list changes a bit everytime I hear them. I would say France and Cyprus my top two at the moment followed by Greece and UK.

That is why the contest is split into two bits… the industry and music professionals and one for the commoner’s… the music pros hear the preformance in the rehearsal
