A dog should be walked with it by your side, not anywhere within a twenty foot radius of you " You used to be able to let your dog run free without a lead but now a lot of places insist on lead only walking. These long leads allow them to run and get enough exercise whilst still being on a lead. And btw, it's pretty easy to draw them back to you if needed, I do it all the time!

"A Devon council is banning those long dog leads being used near cycle paths. Are this council pitting dog owners against cyclists ?" It's near cycle paths and highways. Parks and beaches are fine. You don't need a long line near a road or cycle path. Saying that, I've never seen a dog on a long line in those places so maybe it is a very small minority affected by this

"Does the long lead compensate for poor training " In a way, I'd agree with that comment. It's not just long leads which could get in the way of cyclists, but how many times do irresponsible owners allow their dog to roam at will on an extended lead and get in the way of other people. I thought walking the dog is to have it on a lead beside you, effectively being the 'leader', not giving it free rein to wander!

A black Swan was killed by a dog on a lead recently, a shorter lead gives you more control and helps you avoid accidents on a busy path.

"Not popular I’m sure but dogs are a lower priority than people. Cycling (on a legal route -bridleway) is allowed and good for fitness of the community. Dogs owners seem oblivious to all of this (in some circumstances). If there are dangers on the walk with dogs (cyclists etc) then act accordingly. Short dog lead or choose an open space where there are less dangers. Too many dog walkers just chat and are obvious. I’m a dog owner and cyclist by the way. " Plenty of irresponsible cyclists too. The number of times I've seen them speed past, no hint of them passing and coming out of nowhere behind people is shocking. Plenty of responsible dog owners/walkers and cyclists too. Don't get me started on irresponsible parents, or old people or just people in general. See where I'm going with this? Bottom line is people are cunts. Dogs being lower priority than people is subjective. I'd most certainly save my dog over any random stranger (I don't care the hate I'd get, it's true), my dog has saved my life. They are family, and I'd family comes first.

See Dougie’s me best friend but I very rarely have to pick up his doings, I’ve never asked his missus if she does… Now I loves dogs an all, and I understand you city folk wanting them an all, but does not a bricklayer love his trowel? " Assumption 1. I am not "city folk". I do not leave poo bags in trees. Thats just dumb. 2. Not having to pick up after your dog in the countryside is one of the reasons farmers have to deal with diseases in their cattle caused by dog faeces that can cause pregnant animals to abort.

"If you’ve got a dog on a lead in Devon, ya ain’t local boi, we train our dogs to walk to heel. Bloody city folk, a dog is a tool, not a status symbol. Ridiculous. Dogs are not all working animals. My dog now Has to be on a lead, because she is so old that her hearing isnt sufficient. There is also a legal requirement to keep your dog under control in a public space. If they cant be relied upon to obey, they Must be on a lead. Aye you city folk make me an old dougie laugh so youse do, walking behind your hounds, bending down to pick up their little “trinkets” and then hanging them from trees like some strange dystopian Christmas. "Electric bikes and scooters are far more dangerous trouble is the cycling industry is worth millions and councils are getting huge grants and stuff to improve the infrastructure so there always going to look after them Go on son you have a fucking good moan. Ban every bastard! ![]() The roads are big enough for several cyclists, one car, a horse or 2, people walking and maybe the odd sheep or cow, I would imagine. " Plenty of irresponsible cyclists too. The number of times I've seen them speed past, no hint of them passing and coming out of nowhere behind people is shocking. " It’s impossible for a cyclist to come out of nowhere behind people. Behind is somewhere, so that’s where they came from.
