Seiu Itoh, (3 March 1882 in Tokyo – 28 January 1961 in Tokyo) who is widely regarded as the father of modern kinbaku, replicated a famous classic painting from an earlier period to further his experiments in rope and was known for the following: "notorious exploit of such kind was binding his pregnant wife Kise and having her suspended upside down for a drawing imitating the ukiyo-e The Lonely House on Adachi Moor in Michinoku Province by Yoshitoshi."

I am interested in the history of rope bondage both western and eastern and read widely on both (although Western bondage tends to be dominated by the Americans). I am particularly interested in Japanese rope. As well as having a copy of the Beauty of Kinbaku. I listen to Faviola's Kinbakunomicon, and read information on Japanese rope history including anything on the Kitan Club and other influential Japanese bondage magazines. I have read a number of articles on Seiu Itoh and on this particular photograph. But I have seen no contemporary detail on the setting of the photograph. Given the subject it is not surprising. There are no reports of any harm to the model (his wife) or child, if anything had gone wrong it is likely that it would have been noted in a biographical report. As a side note Kinbaku Books which is dedicated to the history of kinbaku contains a commemoration of Seiu Itoh by Monomura Kou an editor of another influential magazine. The commemoration is called "A great man has fallen". Seiu Itoh gave him a number of photographs including the one in this discussion. This is MK's response. "Of the three photos I received, sensei liked the third best. As noticeable in his drawings, sensei liked the traditional Japanese hairstyle that had become disarranged. This scene probably spoke to him on a sexual level, seeing the cord tying the hair almost about to snap. Speaking of photos, photo (4) is treasured masterpiece. Picture 4: Suspension I received this photo along with the others. At the time, I was an editor for Uramado, and this was to be published in the magazine. It’s probably an unpublished treasure. I don’t know when it was taken, but looking at the photo, it looks like it was taken in sensei’s art studio. Sensei had done a suspension of his pregnant wife like in the image ”The Lonely House on Adachi Moor” and wrote about the hardships he had encountered in Kitan Club. Perhaps photo (4) is from that time? They must have thought ‘how about this?’, tried to take a photo, setting the focus on the camera. However, it seems the rope was slowly slipping, so it didn’t go too well. The person to the left seems to be sensei, but back then they didn’t have the flashlight cameras or panchromatic film we have today. They had to retake many of the photos, so it is most likely one of the one of those retakes. Nowadays, there are loads of automatic cameras. It goes without saying he couldn’t do it without the pregnant model and her do-or-die spirit as she is tied up and suspended, but I think about Seiu-sensei with respect when I think about the tenacity needed doing this." The picture and the painting which gave inspiration can be found online.

"Don't tie a pregnant woman up though please. Find someone else for your rope work " I mean that's a pretty sweeping statement to say bondage can encompass a huge number of things. If someone is pregnant it doesn't automatically mean you can't tie them up... It means you have to be just as aware as any other time of the risks and be aware of how your rope placement can affect nerves and impact blood flow. Bondage and even heavy SM play is just as possible, sure things may need to be amended and additional comfort needs assessed... But that is all part of planning and negotiating a scene. And that includes the bondage bottom being aware of the risks and implications *and* speaking up when they feel uncomfortable or something is wrong. After all PRICK (Personal Responsibility, Informed, Consensual Kink) applies to all people in a scene)

" The picture and the painting which gave inspiration can be found online. " It think like a lot of kink based activities, people will always focus on the extreme end, leaving out the back story, build up etc etc and only showing the most dramatic part of, usually a photo. It like lots of other items are wheeled out to scare, shock and create a desired feeling. That's why it's always worth looking for the meaning, purpose and information behind it. For example, it's said "the rope was slipping" which rope? How do they know it was slipping? Where they there? Is this a first hand account. Much of Japan and it's culture is still behind closed doors to "outsiders". There will be a lot of things we'll never know. But it's fun to catch a glimpse through the window from time to time.

I had meant to reply straightaway but life has been hectic. But it is a good thing that I did not reply straightaway as have I found out further information, that starts from" ...has been lost" below. It is a long read so it is only for those keen on the history of Japanese rope. It is the back story that interests me too, which is why read widely on all things kink. I would recommend Steven Tupper's book 'A Lover's Pinch a Cultural History of Sadomasochism". In relation to the picture the extract is from a commentary remembering Seiu Itoh printed in "T okyo Books" a blog which is dedicated to the origins of Japanese rope. The author of the commentary was passed the pictures by Seiu Itoh in the 1950s. The pictures had been originally created in 1919/20 and published in 1926. Nawa pedia states: "1921: With Kise Sahara ,[his wife] now pregnant, he creates Rinketsu Bijin Sakasa Tsuri no Shashin (Photo in Inverted Suspension of a Beautiful Woman in Her Last Month of Pregnancy). 1926: The December issue of Hentai Shiriou (Pervert Documents) magazine publishes Rinketsu Bijin Sakasa Tsuri no Shashin without his authorization. Accompanied by Rinketsu no Josei no Tsukasazuri (Inverse Suspension of a Woman in Her Last Month of Pregnancy). [There may be a mistake on the text]" Therefore the story of what occurred at the the actual photoshoot I believe has been lost. However, I was wrong to write that last sentence. The Kinbakun omicon podcast episode 8 The Wind Beneath My Rings part 2 has a reading from Selected Suspension Torments by Seiu Itoh, at about 8 minutes in the full story is set out and he does state his wife was checked immediately after by the midwife who found no ill effects. So the comments were purely those of the author Minomura Kou [who in the 1950s was editor of, and contributor to the famous "Kitan Club" one of the early magazines on rope which gave space to many early rope artists and inspired many rope artists) writing about his reminiscences of Itoh Seiu and published in the magazine SM Collector in November 1980. So the commentary is nearly fifty years later but he was looking at the picture in the 1950s. Seiu Itoh (and there were others) early in the twentieth century were creating the elements that were to come to be known a kinbaku. Partly from the existing criminal punishments but also the no longer used historical tortures and punishments of criminals and other persons that run had foul of authority. This is why I don't believe that shibari is an ancient art, or Is descended directly from hojo jutsu. Seiu Itoh's was one of the first to really successfully combine Kabuki (a type of traditional Japanese theatre) and what the Japanese call seme. We would call "seme" torture although some prefer "suffering" as a translation. I suspect your point (and I could be wrong) is made in relation to the glut of Instagram type rope pictures with models in amazing poses and people want to copy the pose. The viewer does not realise the model is probably a professional dancer or an athlete with a core of steel and the flexibility of elastic. These Instagram pictures take hours to set up the picture and a fraction of second to capture the shot. Nor do some of the viewers fully understand what was behind the making of the picture. I was going to say that it is unlikely that a picture from the 1920s would affect people now. But then you have probably seen all the pictures of models tied and posed in freshly fallen snow. Those pictures have a direct line back to Seiu Itoh. Nawa pedia states 1923: Borrowing a farmer's house in Shimotakaido from his student Gajou Sakamoto, he brings along photographer Raisui Suzuki to take photos of snow torture.
